Nell'estate del 1936 la rivista Fortune invia in Alabama un giovane scrittore, James Agee, e un fotografo, Walker Evans, per lavorare a un articolo sulla «vita quotidiana e l'ambiente di una famiglia media bianca di contadini fittavoli».
