História Económica e do Trabalho, 1850-1870

    Economic History & Labor, 1850-1870

Economic History & Labor, 1850-1870, Dr. James Curtis Jr. PhD, Director & Senior Fellow, Internet Graduate Research Institute, June 29, 2022, "Leon Litwack (1961) and Ira Berlin (1974) provide the most comprehensive historical accounts of free blacks in the north and south respectively. This paper attempts to build upon their successes by presenting a national study that combines the legal, demographic and economic experiences of free blacks, with an extended analysis of antebellum wealth inequality. In doing so, I propose the asymmetry hypothesis, which is an investigation of the link between the social conditions and economic outcomes of free blacks relative to whites. For the empirical portion of the study, I employ cross-sectional variables from the IPUMS samples. This paper finds that economic differences between free blacks and whites were intertwined with asymmetrical social constraints. While the legal and social status of free blacks was significantly better than slaves, their status did not equal that of whites. Yet free blacks did attempt to overcome the social conditions by structuring their households to provide a basic foundation for the pursuit of happiness."

    Machine Learning for High-Risk Applications

The past decade has witnessed the broad adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) technologies. However, a lack of oversight in their widespread implementation has resulted in some incidents and harmful outcomes that could have been avoided with proper risk management. Before we can realize AI/ML's true benefit, practitioners must understand how to mitigate its risks. This book describes approaches to responsible AI--a holistic framework for improving AI/ML technology, business processes, and cultural competencies that builds on best practices in risk management, cybersecurity, data privacy, and applied social science. Authors Patrick Hall, James Curtis, and Parul Pandey created this guide for data scientists who want to improve real-world AI/ML system outcomes for organizations, consumers, and the public. Learn technical approaches for responsible AI across explainability, model validation and debugging, bias management, data privacy, and ML security Learn how to create a successful and impactful AI risk management practice Get a basic guide to existing standards, laws, and assessments for adopting AI technologies, including the new NIST AI Risk Management Framework Engage with interactive resources on GitHub and Colab

  8. Economic Sociology & Theoretical Differences in Wealth

Economic Sociology & Theoretical Differences in Wealth

Foremost, a theory of relative wealth is presented, where wealth is determined by group-specific wages, hours of work, consumption, and interest rates. Historical black-white differences in wealth were estimated using regression decomposition. This technique decomposes economic differences into the portion explained by differences in characteristics and the unexplained portion due to different returns to a set of characteristics (See, eg, Blinder 1973 and Oaxaca 1973). Results confirm that we cannot reject that the claim that, when comparing the wealth of ex-slaves to the wealth whites, differences in wealth due to unexplained (or discrimination) effects dominate the portion due to classical characteristic differences.

The 19th Century US Economic History of Land, Property & Wealth Owners

    1. 'The debate over market/individual regulation and freedom is not a new discussion. However, a clear understanding of the freedoms (or the lack of freedoms) and their economic consequences on early black Americans provides an informative understanding to the freedoms (or the lack of freedoms), and their economic consequences on other, modern ethnic groups. Leon Litwack (1961) and Ira Berlin (1974) provide the most comprehensive historical accounts of free blacks in the north and south, respectively. This study attempts to build upon their successes by presenting one of the first national studies', 2. 'The debate over market/individual regulation and freedom dates as far back as religious Holy documents, such as The Holy Bible' |KJV, Exodus 20 2-17, Phillipians 4 13|, ...This book 'focuses on the plight of the average antebellum free black American, which, in hindsight, illuminated the path of the average black American, after emancipation, as well as Americans of other ethnicities over time', 3.
