The cosmos and Man’s place in it have fascinated humans for thousands of years. These mind-bending cosmic questions keep scientists awake at night, but also fuel the imagination and fantasy of artists. This unique book combines the insights of scientists and visual artists, offering a magnificent overview of the visualisation of the Universe from the Neolithic to the present. In addition, dozens of stunning modern and contemporary artworks engage in a dialogue with the Big Bang theory in its various forms. Professor Georges Lemaître formulated his revolutionary theory about the origin of the Universe in 1931 at the University of Leuven. In 2021, our ideas about this Big Bang and the cosmos as a whole are still evolving. Our astonishment and desire to visualise what we are unable to comprehend fully, however, remain unchanged. Big Bang – Imagining the Universe is published on the occasion of two exhibitions organised in the context of 'BANG! Big Bang City Festival' in Leuven, from 15 October 2021 until 30 January 2022. Tientallen verbluffende moderne en hedendaagse kunstwerken gaan daarnaast in dialoog met de bigbangtheorie in haar diverse vormen. Professor Georges Lemaître lanceerde zijn revolutionaire inzichten over de oerknal in 1931 aan de Leuvense universiteit en zette zo de wereld op zijn kop. Anno 2021 zijn onze ideeën over de big bang en de kosmos nog altijd in evolutie, maar de verwondering en het verlangen om vorm te geven aan wat we niet helemaal kunnen doorgronden blijven onveranderd. De publicatie verschijnt naar aanleiding van twee tentoonstellingen die georganiseerd worden in het kader van 'KNAL! Stadsfestival van de Big Bang' in Leuven van 15 oktober 2021 tot 30 januari 2022. Verbeelding van het universum is een cultuurhistorische tentoonstelling in M Leuven. Voorbij de oerknal in de Leuvense Universiteitsbibliotheek is een expo op het snijvlak van wetenschappen enerzijds en moderne en actuele beeldende kunst anderzijds. Met verhelderende teksten van onder anderen Barbara Baert, Abdelkader Benali, Thomas Hertog, Hannah Redler Hawes, Jan Van der Stock en Annelies Vogels. Barbara Baert is als hoogleraar verbonden aan de vakgroep kunstwetenschappen van de KU Leuven. Thomas Hertog is theoretisch natuurkundige en hoogleraar aan de KU Leuven. Hij werkte nauw samen met Stephen Hawking.

Early Prints
The Print Room of the Royal Library of Belgium currently possesses roughly 700,000 independent prints, including a few hundred early woodcuts and engravings from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which make up one of the most important parts of the collection. In the course of time, only a small portion of these has been recorded in a systematic catalogue. One-and-a-half centuries ago, in 1857, the head curator Louis Alvin catalogued the Library's noteworthy collection of Italian niello prints. Thirty-five years later, in 1892, Max Lehrs, then head of the Dresden Print Room, published the first and only inventory of the collection of fifteenth-century northern engravings in the Royal Library's Print Room. As for the two other parts of the collection included in this book, namely the early woodcuts and the early Italian prints, this is the very first time that each has been examined as a group. Consequently, the exceptionally rich collection of early prints in the Royal Library of Belgium has remained essentially unknown to many thus far. This catalogue is a first step in making the collection better known.

De kleine oorlog van drie broers Frans-Aime-Octaaf Van der Stock
dagboeken - brieven - documenten 1914-1920Het boek bevat getuigenissen van drie Belgische frontsoldaten tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Frans, Aimé en Octaaf Van der Stock, drie broers uit een gezin van acht uit Burcht bij Antwerpen, waren slechts figuranten in een voorstelling waarin ontroerend idealisme en aandoenlijk optimisme, na de turbulente maar overmoedige augustus- en septemberdagen van 1914, snel van het toneel werden gespeeld door ontbering, moordend heimwee en de alomtegenwoordige stank van de dood. Geluk en rampspoed, leven en sterven, alles hing af van dramatisch toeval. Slechts twee broers kwamen terug naar huis. Eén bleef op het slagveld achter. De echo s uit dat felle verleden werden opgetekend in twee dagboeken en tientallen brieven die hier integraal worden uitgegeven. Het zijn meestal kleine particuliere gebeurtenissen die zich afspeelden tegen het immense decor van de wereldgeschiedenis. Op het eerste gezicht zijn ze niet meer dan wat achtergrondruis bij de grote gebeurtenissen. Bij nader toezien echter treffen die bijna uitgewiste sporen de ontluisterende essentie van oorlog recht in het hart. Dit is het verhaal van kleine mensen in de Groote Oorlog 1914-1918.
