"Compelling and intimate, this collection of never-before-seen letters between the celebrated art critic and essayist, John Berger and his son Yves, an artist, is a moving look at their musings on art, memory, life, death, and beyond. Written between 2015-16, with 53 color images of well-known old masters and contemporary art as well as some of the Bergers' own drawings and watercolors, Over to You is an informal back and forth not unlike the ping-pong games father and son used to play in the barn of their house. It begins when John - who is in a Parisian suburb - sends Yves - who is in Haute Savoie - an envelope of reproductions of art that have moved him. And so they begin to reveal their thoughts looking at a Goya, Watteau, Twombly, Joan Mitchell, Durer, Caravaggio, Manet, and Euan Uglow, among many others. But the art is just a way to summon shared emotions and memories, as well as deepen their understanding of the world and its mysteries. John at 89 is the more formal teacher, Yves at 39 comes across as the younger, philosophical artist. There are John's thoughts on the use of color, light and space in, say, a Dèurer, or a Beckmann to the question of "staying fully alive"; or Yves noting how much in life exceeds our understanding, the gap between our consciousness and our feeling, between the said and the unsaid. "That's the zone where I would like us to meet. Are you coming?" He asks his father. "I may need other eyes to confirm what is really there. Like your eyes always did." This is an exceptional and moving tribute to a relationship between a father and son, and between two artists, as well as a thought provoking look at questions we all have about work, time, the universe, life and death"--

Der Augenblick der Fotografie
John Berger, 1926 in London geboren, studierte Zeichnung und Malerei. Seine bahnbrechende Fernsehserie ¿Sehen. Das Bild der Welt in der Bilderwelt¿ definierte unsere Art, Kunst zu betrachten, neu; das Buch zur Serie wurde zum Standardwerk. In ¿Der siebte Mensch¿ beschäftigte er sich als einer der ersten mit dem Thema Migration. Mit seinen Romanen, Geschichten und Essays, seiner politischen Insistenz und seinem zärtlichen Blick auf die Wirklichkeit wurde er zu einer der eigenständigsten Stimmen des 20. Jahrhunderts. John Berger starb Anfang 2017 in der Nähe von Paris. Hans Jürgen Balmes, 1958 in Koblenz geboren, ist Lektor und Übersetzer. Für 'Mare' schrieb er über die 'Quellen der Meere'. Porträts und Aufsätze schienen u. a. in der 'Neuen Zürcher Zeitung' und der 'Süddeutschen Zeitung'. Aus dem Englischen übersetzte er John Berger, Barry Lopez sowie Gedichte von Robert Hass, W. S. Merwin, Martine Bellen und Warsan Shire. Geoff Dyer, geboren 1958, ist Autor mehrerer preisgekrönter Romane und Sachbücher, u.a. die Jazz-Studie 'But Beautiful' (2003, ausgezeichnet mit dem Somerset Maugham Award), den Roman 'Sex in Venedig, Tod in Varanasi' (2012) und eine Annäherung an D. H. Lawrence, 'Aus schierer Wut' (2016). Er lebt in Bristol, England.

Ritratti
John Berger non sopportava di essere definito un critico d'arte. Lo riteneva un insulto. Eppure per tutta la vita ha continuato a descrivere i suoi incontri con l'arte, le epifanie di fronte a un dipinto o una scultura, i viaggi immaginari negli atelier in cui un'opera veniva pensata e realizzata. Poco importava che quegli incontri assumessero le sembianze di un romanzo, una poesia o un saggio; non si trattava di critica, ma di narrazione nel senso più antico del termine: una voce che racconta ciò che gli occhi hanno visto e le mani toccato, un ascoltatore che riceve in dono un'esperienza e uno sguardo, e infine uno spazio da condividere. Se non è critica, questo volume non è neppure un canone o una storia dell'Arte - anche se prende avvio dalle pitture rupestri e termina oltre Basquiat -, perché per John Berger tutti gli artisti ospitati nella sua scrittura sono ancora vivi e presenti: sono vivi gli ignoti pittori della Cueva de las Manos, che migliaia di anni fa portano nel profondo della terra il vento, il tuono, il dolore e i luoghi remoti; è vivo Rembrandt, per cui l'abbraccio è sinonimo di pittura; è viva Frida Kahlo, che dipinge con la sua stessa pelle; è vivo Matisse, mentre fa cozzare i suoi colori come cembali di una ninna nanna; ed è vivo Picasso, che dipinge sulla tela una bestemmia. Ritratti è la raccolta più completa degli incontri di John Berger con i suoi artisti: dai pugnaci scritti militanti degli anni cinquanta a quelli più recenti e pensosi, molti dei quali inediti in Italia. Del resto, che per Berger un ritratto fosse un incontro, lo ha chiarito nel descrivere un suo stesso disegno: «A poco a poco la testa sulla carta si è fatta più simile alla sua. Ma ora sapevo che non le si sarebbe mai avvicinata abbastanza, perché, come può capitare quando si disegna, avevo finito per amarla, per amare tutto di lei». Gli ottantotto ritratti di questo libro sono atti d'amore scritti con la stessa matita con cui era solito disegnare: ottantotto incontri fatti di approcci, cancellature e successivi ripensamenti, di colpi di fulmine immediati e laboriose riconciliazioni. Sono l'«inconsapevole diario di bordo» di un grande storyteller, l'autobiografia di un uomo attraverso ciò che ha osservato.
