John Muir is elf als zijn vader in 1849 besluit om van Dunbar in Schotland te emigreren naar Amerika en er een stuk land te kopen in de onontgonnen wildernis van Wisconsin. Na een overtocht van ruim zes weken over de oceaan komt John terecht in een nieuwe wereld met een ongekende rijkdom aan planten en dieren en een waar vogelparadijs. Hier is geen school en geen samenleving meer, alleen natuur. Jongensjaren is geschreven door een van 's werelds grootste natuurbeschermers. Muirs natuurboeken bereiken een miljoenenpubliek en tal van parken, bossen, meren, straten en scholen zijn naar hem vernoemd.
