    B-Side: PHOTOGRAPHY. AFROPEAN. FUSION

The Eyes questions cultural and societal evolutions through the prism of photography and creation and gives carte blanche to experts directly concerned by the subjects addressed. B-Side, the upcoming issue of The Eyes journal, invites its readers to a visual exploration of what it means to be Afropean, a notion of expertise of our guest curator Johny Pitts, British photographer and author. Historical and contemporary photographers, seminal and singular books and journals will explore the diversity of black identities as experienced in Europe. Entitled “B-Side“, this issue is strongly inspired by music, the field that gave birth to the term Afropean. B-Side is also an opportunity to take an offbeat approach and look at the B-side, the one we don’t hear much about and see most of the time in a marginal way. ABOUT JOHNY PITTS – THE EYES #12 GUEST CURATOR Johny Pitts is the curator of the ENAR (European Network Against Racism) award-winning online journal Afropean. com and the author of Afropean: Notes from Black Europe (Penguin Random House). Afropeaan

    Not Quite Right For Us

Defiant, humorous and insightful, 'Not Quite Right For Us' pierces through the hierarchical mechanics of class, race, gender. A celebration of outsiderness and an ode to otherness, 'Not Quite Right For Us' is a singular collection of stories, essays and poems by a dynamic mix of established and surging voices alike, edited by Sharmilla Beezmohun.

    Looks and Smiles

An unsentimental, sympathetic novel of the unemployed young in Thatcher's Britain. From Barry Hines, writer of A Kestrel for a Knave and The Gamekeeper 1980, Sheffield: a city on its knees after decades of steel industry decline and facing the brutal economic policies of Thatcher. Mick wants to learn how to be a motorcycle mechanic, but bad luck, inexperience, and tough times make it hard to find a job. At a disco one evening, he meets Karen, who works in a shoe shop, and the pair hang out with Mick's buddy, Alan. Mick and Alan's efforts to find jobs are in vain and they face a choice: remain jobless or join the army, which is recruiting to police the North of Ireland. The author's unerring eye for detail and ear for dialogue are utterly engaging and evocative. Looks and Smiles is a gritty and poignant bulletin from a forgotten period of British history. A Barry Hines classic.
