een verheldering van de voornaamste kwesties van theologie en godsdienstAdriaan Koerbagh ontleedt in Een licht dat schijnt in duistere plaatsen met 'het licht van de rede' fundamentele christelijke noties als de Schepper, de Drieëenheid, hemel en hel, engelen en duivels, geloof in wonderen. Volgens hem vallen God en Natuur samen en is theologie een natuurwetenschap. Koerbaghs doel was een vrije en vrijzinnige samenleving; hij had zich tot taak gesteld met scherpe pen commentaar te leveren op wat hij als misstanden ervoer. Zonder twijfel zou Een licht dat schijnt in duistere plaatsen een grote inspiratiebron zijn geweest voor de radicale Verlichtingsdenkers als het in 1668 ongehinderd had kunnen verschijnen. Nu werd echter vrijwel de hele oplage vernietigd en wachtte Koerbagh een ander lot: om zijn antichristelijke boek werd hij bestraft met een ketterproces in het 'vrijzinnige' Amsterdam en in 1669 overleed hij in het Rasphuis. Een licht verzonk ten onrechte in de vergetelheid. Michiel Wielema is filosoof en vertaler. Hij was onder meer onderzoeker aan de Faculteit Wijsbegeerte van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Wielema is een van de samenstellers van de Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Dutch Philosophers en verzorgde eerder een vertaling van Een licht in het Engels.
