Oorlog, geschreven ongeveer twee jaar na Reis naar het einde van de nacht (1932), speelt zich af in Vlaanderen tijdens de Grote Oorlog. Céline schrijft, ergens tussen autobiografie en fictie, over de belangrijkste ervaring van zijn bestaan: het fysieke en morele trauma van het front, in het ‘internationale slachthuis van de waanzin’. We volgen het herstel van Brigadier Ferdinand vanaf het moment dat hij bij bewustzijn komt op het slag veld na ernstig gewond te zijn geraakt, tot aan zijn ver trek naar Londen. In het ziekenhuis van Peurdu-sur-la-lys schudt hij de dood van zich af en ontloopt daarmee het lot dat hem wachtte. Die brute tijd en dat proces van ontgoocheling en bewustwording, die Céline niet eerder in een zelfstandig literair verhaal had beschre ven, verschijnen hier in hun rauwste vorm.

Reis naar het einde van de nacht
‘In de richting die hij ons aanwees was alleen maar nacht, zoals overal trouwens, een enorme nacht.’ Antiheld Bardamu onderneemt een zinloze tocht door een wereld die stukgeslagen is door de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het is een huiveringwekkende reis in Céline’s ‘emotieve metro’ door de krochten van onze maatschappij. Het uitzicht is hypnotiserend. De aanklacht is onverminderd fel.

Dood op krediet
In Dood op krediet gebruikt Louis-Ferdinand Céline zijn virtuoze schrijfstijl om de banaliteit, absurditeit en hypocrisie van de mens te tonen. Met pikzwarte humor laat hij zien hoe in de straten van Parijs de strijd om het bestaan wordt geleverd. In deze klassieke roman uit 1936 beschrijft de bohemienachtige, in een Parijse volksbuurt werkende arts Ferdinand de misère van zijn jeugd. De wil van koning Krogold
De lezers van Céline kennen de ‘legende’ die sinds Dood op krediet als een spook door zijn oeuvre waart. Het was dan ook opzienbarend dat zich onder de manuscripten die in 2021 opdoken het typoscript van De legende van koning René en het manuscript van een latere versie daarvan, De wil van koning Krogold, bleken te bevinden. Dit is niet de Céline die de ellende van het menselijk bestaan met een agressieve, bittere humor en een niets ontziende directheid weergeeft. Hij toont ons een andere, meer sprookjesachtige kant van zijn verbeelding. Het verhaal speelt in de middeleeuwen, de personages zijn een koning, een prins, een prinses, een troubadour, en het is geschreven in een lyrische stijl, geïnspireerd door ridderromans, orale verteltradities en de taal van Rabelais. Dit afwijkende karakter neemt niet weg dat het in zijn oeuvre een cruciale en poëticale rol speelt. Colorful characters populate London: besides Cantaloup and Angèle, there is the generous poor Jewish doctor Yugenbitz, the corrupt cop Bijou, an eccentric English aristocrat, a slew of pimps, a rich variety of whores, and the revolutionary former bomb-maker Borokrom. London is also a sweeping, grand-narrative-as-funhouse-mirror of Céline's own dual profession of medicine and writing: It's true I was sick and in a lot of pain and so I was justified. The consolation of having found Yugenbitz and the path, and the way that he'd given me hope to understand his beautiful work, that had sort of intoxicated me, I admit. I'm a little too enthusiastic about things of the mind. I'd have liked I think to cure all human diseases, so they'd never suffer again, the bastards. We're a strange lot, if we only admit it. Fine.

Céline squaderna una galleria di personaggi eroici nella turpitudine, alcuni già incontrati in Guerra come la prostituta Angèle e il maggiore Purcell (qui trasformato in folle inventore), o il bombarolo dostoevskiano Borokrom, i due papponi rivali Cantaloup e Tregonet, e il medico ebreo Yugenbitz, 'pura bontà', quello che Céline avrebbe voluto diventare. Tutti dal destino segnato, popolano giorno e notte grandi arterie e angiporti, androni e locali malfamati, parchi e latrine. La violenza, l'intensità quasi insopportabile di questa prosa dimostrano che il romanzo ci è pervenuto in una versione non purgata, che mai avrebbe potuto vedere la luce negli anni Trenta, quando è stato scritto, e resta materia incandescente ancora oggi. Perché Céline, lo sappiamo, vuole arrivare 'fino a dove c'è l'origine di tutto'. E per farlo ha bisogno di trovare la giusta dose di delirio, di far suonare il suo organetto nella nebbia, sul selciato infido della City, verso l'acqua che lo ha sempre tentato, verso il Tamigi: 'È la notte del mondo che scorre, sotto i ponti.
