In an autobiographical letter, the author refers to this work as the "...bitterest of all, profoundly humoristic, about the decomposition of life...." Vitangelo, the protagonist, discovers by way of a completely irrelevant question that his wife poses to him that everyone he knows, and everyone he has ever met, has constructed a Vitangelo persona in their own imagination and that none of these personas corresponds to the image of Vitangelo that he himself has constructed and believes himself to be. The reader is immediately immersed in a cruel game of confusing projections, mirroring the reality of social existence itself, which imperiously dictate their rules. As a result, the first, ironic "awareness" of Vitangelo consists in the knowledge of that which he definitely is not; the preliminary operation must therefore consist in the spiteful destruction of all of these fictitious masks.

Uno, nessuno e centomila

La storia narra di Vitangelo Moscarda, un uomo ordinario che ha ereditato un cospicuo patrimonio dal padre e vive di rendita. Un giorno la moglie Dida gli fa notare un piccolo difetto fisico di cui non si era mai accorto: il naso leggermente storto. Questa semplice e apparentemente innocua osservazione gli fa capire quanto gli altri abbiano una percezione di lui completamente diversa da quella che egli ha di se stesso. Ciò lo scaglierà in un vortice di annullamento umoristico e folle del proprio io, fino a diventare Uno, nessuno e centomila.

Il fu Mattia Pascal
Mattia Pascal è un uomo profondamente infelice. La difficile situazione familiare in cui si trova ma soprattutto la morte dei due figli e della sua amatissima madre provocano in lui una crisi profonda. Si reca all'insaputa di tutti a Montecarlo, attratto dal gioco d'azzardo, e riesce a vincere un'enorme somma di denaro. Mentre pensa a come utilizzare al meglio questa inattesa ricchezza, scorge per caso sul giornale la sconvolgente notizia della propria morte. La moglie e la suocera hanno infatti riconosciuto nel cadavere di un uomo ritrovato nella gora di un mulino proprio il corpo di Mattia. Quell'incredibile notizia fa nascere in lui la volontà di iniziare una nuova vita, rompendo ogni legame con il passato. Assume quindi l'identità di Adriano Meis e inizia a viaggiare godendosi il denaro. Tuttavia la costante solitudine che lo accompagna, il non volersi o potersi mai legare a nessuno e a niente e l'impossibilità di vivere il suo amore per Adriana, conosciuta durante il soggiorno a Roma, lo portano a considerare assurda la sua condizione, tanto che decide di porre fi ne alla vita di Adriano Meis inscenando il suo suicidio. Tornato ad essere di nuovo Mattia Pascal si rende però conto che nulla è ormai come prima e che la vita passata non gli appartiene più.
