Een nagelaten bekentenis

Laat ik u nu eens vertellen van mijn boek 'Een nagelaten bekentenis'. Dat is de geschiedenis van een dégénéré, die eindigt met zijn vrouw te vermoorden. Het begint met de woorden: 'ik heb mijn vrouw vermoord', en dan ontwikkelt hij zijn levensgeschiedenis: hoe hij tot die daad is gekomen. Het boek is goed gerecenseerd, maar het publiek vindt het verschrikkelijk, afschuwelijk, dat weet ik wel.En nu kunt u niet wéten; hòeveel brieven ik heb gekregen van menschen die zeggen: ik ben net zoo. Nog geen drie maanden geleden kreeg ik een brief uit Amsterdam: u weet niet hoe dankbaar of ik ben, dat ik dat boek gelezen heb. Ook kreeg ik een brief van een dame, die had een neef, en die neef was ook zoo. Of ik een vereeniging wou stichten die dergelijke dégénéré's onder haar hoede nam en door het leven leidde. Dat was natuurlijk niets voor mij... Maar aan den anderen kant hoorde ik van een dame, die had daar haar eigen man in herkend, en die man had zich zelf herkend en nu kwamen al die zenuwverschijnselen weer bij 'm terug.
