The effect of the European state aid rules on German regional airports
Scientific Study from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1.3, University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main (Fachbereich Wirtschaft & Recht), language: English, abstract: State aid is an eligible instrument to support the local industrial and commercial development. While prohibited on the one hand, exemptions exist, which allow within tight constraints the support by the states. With the new guidelines on state aid, competition within the airport industry is less influenced by the governments and market disruption reduced. The regional airports, being supported by the state to a high extent, are challenged to reshape their business models in order to remain sustainable for the future. The pressure is high as the many regional airports within Germany are challenging themselves as well as larger and also smaller airports at the same time. Selected approaches with sustainable character are shown in this paper along with a brief overview on the situation of the regional airports within Germany along with the new guidelines.

Aviation Biofuels. Curse or Cure for Green Aviation?
Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Aerospace Technology, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the challenges and chances of biofuels in an aviation context. It begins by providing a brief history on biofuels in general and in aviation specifically. It is followed by an overview of the main driving forces for the aviation industry to invest in biofuels and their development. After that, different available biofuels and their segmentation in first, second, and third generations is shown in more detail along with a basic overview on the production processes that existon the market. Based on the given information, first the challenges and after that, the chances, for the aviation industry on investing in aviation biofuels is shown into detail. The paper claims that the biofuels still have major issues as there is no real alternative on the market or in development that can substitute crude oil-based jet fuel up to 100%. Current biofuels can only be used as mixtures with conventional jet fuel. However, the biggest issue, namely that biofuels cannot be certified in aviation because of their specifications,is solved with second-generation biofuels. The main challenges are still to find a sustainable biofuel that can be used without changes to existing aircraft propulsion technology and nothing ensures that this will be possible in the necessary timeframe until the crude oil finally starts to become less available. That point in time is constantly updated, but only based on statistical data. It is not known atwhat point in time this will be exactly. However, there are a number of opportunities. They range from having an alternative to substitute conventional jet fuel for emission reduction reasons to the investment of an aircraft operator to the production of biofuel itself. This could be for the sake of entering new markets or just to integrate the fuel supply into the company-owned supply chain. The paper concludes that a lot of development still seems to need to be required before a real alternative to conventional jet fuel is available on a largescale. The most promising approach today is the algae-based fuel.

Dismissal on Grounds of Sickness in Germany
Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main, language: English, abstract: Dismissal on grounds of sickness in Germany is a subpart of the dismissal on grounds of personal capability. Generally any illness is not a reasonable condition to dismiss an employee. However continuous sickleaves or a long lasting illness causes high costs for a company. A specific juridical definition of such a dismissal is not stated in the German law. To address this issue, the law in Germany sets certain frame conditions with a specific testing scheme in three stages for it. During this process, certain circumstances have to be proven in order to legally dismiss an employee.Four different typical types of dismissal on grounds of sickness exist in the German law, which are divided in long-lasting sickness, permanent incapacity for work, reduced performance and frequent short-term sickleaves of the employee. All of those can lead to a dismissal. The obligatory three-stage testing scheme needs to prove a negative forecast of the health of the employee, a severe harm to the company through the sickness and the company has to balance the interests of the company and the employee. Along with that, the application of a reintegration management after sickness has to be applied.Within this process the appropriate participation of the works council according to law and the law of equality has to be respected. The major burden of proof remains in the whole process on the employer, however the highest risk stays with the employee. As there is no prescribed timeline, a long-lasting law process can harm an employee even more as he has to suffer not only from his illness but also from the financial pressure.

The Impact of Mobile Services on the Interaction between Airlines and Passengers
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to research how mobile services impact the interaction between airlines and passengers. The paper begins with a PEST analysis of the European airline industry and focuses on technological changes. It continues with a SWOT analysis of Lufthansa, where we interlink mobile technology as a platform which could reduce costs for the airline. In-depth research on mobile services and their impact on the interaction between airlines and passengers is performed by evaluating different mobile services along Lufthansa's value chain, namely the airline's activities in operations, outbound logistics and marketing and sales. We claim that the interaction through mobile services is limited to one-way interaction, where airlines embrace the mobile services to perform cost reduction along their value chain, and neither offer two-way interaction with their passengers nor asking them to co-create the brand or the product. The current wireless mobile services are already offered via the internet, and allow a better and direct service for passengers. Mobile services are necessary for airlines, so they are not seen as out of date, but it does not mean that having mobile services contributes to having a competitive advantage. On the contrary, not having mobile services results in strategic disadvantage.
