Vietnam. Una tragedia epica 1945-1975
La guerra del Vietnam costituisce senza dubbio il conflitto che, dopo la fine della Seconda guerra mondiale, ha esercitato la maggiore influenza sulla cultura del proprio tempo e su quella degli anni successivi. A quasi mezzo secolo di distanza, sono ancora vive nella memoria collettiva le immagini che ne fanno una guerra-simbolo del secondo Novecento: la foto, ad esempio, del capo della polizia di Saigon che spara a un prigioniero vietcong durante l'offensiva del Tet nel 1968; o quella della bambina che urla, correndo nuda in preda alla sofferenza dopo essere rimasta vittima di un attacco con il napalm nel 1972; o la foto della scala sulla quale, la sera del 29 aprile 1975, alla vigilia della caduta di Saigon, i fuggiaschi salgono verso un elicottero, come se stessero ascendendo al Calvario. Attraverso tali immagini si è radicata, in Occidente, la percezione dell'umiliazione subita in quel conflitto dagli Stati Uniti, la nazione più potente del pianeta, e del contrasto fra l'arte bellica di una superpotenza, che metteva in campo una tecnologia diabolica simbolizzata dal bombardiere b-52, e quella di contadini che indossavano il cappello a cono di paglia o il casco coloniale, e che per spostarsi si affidavano ai sandali e alle biciclette. La guerra durò tre decenni, costò fra i due e i tre milioni di vite e, negli Stati Uniti, determinò la rovina di un presidente e la caduta di un altro. Ha prodotto, inoltre, una sterminata letteratura, oltre a numerosi film, canzoni e così via. In nessuna opera, tuttavia, è stata indagata come in questo monumentale libro. Max Hastings ricostruisce la sua vicenda politica e strategica con un rigoroso ordine cronologico, mostrando l'imperizia dell'amministrazione americana nella conduzione del conflitto ¿ dapprima con mille esitazioni, nel timore di una reazione degli alleati russi e cinesi del Vietnam del Nord, poi con una risolutezza spropositata che, con l'operazione Rolling Thunder, il bombardamento forzato, ebbe il solo effetto di rafforzare il supporto popolare al regime vietcong «generando un entusiasmo patriottico e nazionalista».
