Corre l'anno 1942 e l'esito del piú grande conflitto della Storia è lungi dall'essere scritto. L'Unione Sovietica e gli Stati Uniti non hanno ancora dispiegato tutte le loro forze; sulla terra come nei cieli, Germania e Italia hanno il controllo della gran parte delle sponde mediterranee; i carri armati di Rommel sono alle porte dell'Egitto; i giapponesi minacciano l'India, l'Australasia e l'America settentrionale; le forze dell'Asse sono sul Don e la cruciale battaglia a Stalingrado è appena cominciata. Nel cuore dello scontro globale c'è l'isola di Malta, dal 1815 gioiello della Corona inglese, scalo lungo la via per l'Oriente, campo di polo per generazioni di ufficiali della Marina, carcere per i marinai ubriachi. Ma, soprattutto, dall'autunno del '41, base per lanciare operazioni contro il nemico, che si traducono nell'affondamento del 75 per cento delle navi di rifornimento tedesche e italiane dirette in Nordafrica.
