'Questo libro è basato sulle mie esperienze durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. In qualità di Ufficiale di Stato Maggiore ho partecipato ad alcune delle più importanti Campagne in Africa, in Russia e sul fronte occidentale, venendo a contatto diretto con molti dei più valenti soldati tedeschi, come il Feldmaresciallo Erwin Rommel e il Generale Hermann Balck. All'esordio del conflitto ho fatto parte, in qualità di Capitano, dello Stato Maggiore del III Corpo d'Armata che invase la Polonia, e alla fine della guerra ero Maggior Generale e Capo di Stato Maggiore della 5a Panzerarmee nella sacca della Ruhr. Sono stato in servizio durante tutta la guerra e impegnato in combattimento in Polonia, Francia, Balcani, Nordafrica, Russia (nelle battaglie di Stalingrado, Kursk, Kharkov, Zhitomir, Kiev e sul Dnieper), poi di nuovo in Polonia, in Francia, e infine nelle Ardenne e in Renania.
