Die Erforschung der Musikgeschichte in Bayern ist das Hauptanliegen der Reihe Musik in Bayern, die von der Gesellschaft für Bayerische Musikgeschichte e.¿V. herausgegeben wird. Inhaltlich zeigt sich in den Jahrbüchern eine thematische Vielfalt, die über rein regional-historische Forschung hinausweist.Musik in Bayern veröffentlicht seit 2020 (Jg. 85) wissenschaftliche Beiträge, die nach dem Single-Blind-Verfahren begutachtet werden. Die Beiträge sind nach einem gängigen Peer-Review-Verfahren anonym referiert. Zudem sind alle Teile des Jahrbuchs ein Jahr nach Erscheinen open access zugänglich und online über das Repositorium der Digitalisierungsstelle der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek abrufbar: https://jahrbuch.gfbm-online.de/Musik in Bayern veröffentlicht Beiträge zur Musikgeschichte und musikalischen Denkmalpflege in Bayern.
