Egli studiò le forme della proprietà comune nelle società precapitaliste, intraprese indagini di antropologia e scienze naturali, analizzò lo sviluppo del capitalismo negli Stati Uniti e si interessò alle trasformazioni in atto in Russia a seguito dell'abolizione della servitù della gleba. Allo stesso modo fu acuto osservatore dei principali avvenimenti di politica internazionale della sua epoca e deciso sostenitore dell'indipendenza nazionale della Polonia, dell'abolizione della schiavitù durante la Guerra di Secessione Americana e della lotta per la liberazione dell'Irlanda. Al contempo, egli manifestò la più ferma opposizione al colonialismo. Questo libro documenta, con grande scrupolosità, che Marx non si occupò solo del conflitto tra capitale e lavoro e ribalta il mito, in voga negli ultimi anni, di un autore economicista ed eurocentrico.
