Het verhaal van paus Franciscus (Buenos Aires, 17 december 1936 - Rome, 21 april 2025) begint in de jaren 20 van de twintigste eeuw, toen zijn voorouders van Italië naar Zuid-Amerika migreerden. De paus neemt de lezer mee naar zijn vroege jeugd en gaat in op zijn roeping en zijn opleiding te Buenos Aires. Ook verhaalt hij over zijn volwassen leven en, vanaf 2013, zijn pontificaat. Oorspronkelijk was het de wens van paus Franciscus dat dit bijzondere boek pas na zijn dood zou verschijnen, maar het Jubeljaar 2025 met als thema ‘Pelgrims van Hoop’ en de uitdagende tijden waarin we leven brachten hem ertoe deze waardevolle nalatenschap nu al uit te brengen.
