He is former president of the American Association for Teachers of Arabic and Executive Director of the Arabic Linguistics Society.   Adam Sabra is Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he holds the King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud Chair in Islamic Studies. He specializes in the social and cultural history of Mamluk and Ottoman Egypt, with particular interests in poverty and charity, Sufism, and Arabic literature in the Ottoman period.

Previous publications include The Renewal of Islamic Law (Cambridge,1993), which won the Middle East Studies Association's Albert Hourani Award, Philosophy of Nonviolence (2015), and Democracy Redefined (2025). As the lawyer of the Sadr family, he established the responsibility of Muammar Qaddafi for the disappearance of Musa Sadr in Libya in 1978.
