Il Principe
Weinig namen uit de Italiaanse Renaissance spreken zo tot de verbeelding als die van Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527): secretaris van de Florentijnse Republiek, politiek denker, toneelschrijver, historicus. Zijn traktaat Il Principe (doorgaans vertaald als De vorst of De heerser) is een van de bekendste en invloedrijkste politieke teksten uit de westerse literatuur. Il Principe is vaak verketterd, omdat het werk immoreel zou zijn. Maar Machiavelli is niet geïnteresseerd in mooie woorden en schone schijn. Discorsi
Gedachten over Staat en PolitiekNiccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) is een typische exponent van een overgangstijd. Bij zijn geboorte bestaat Italië uit een aantal onafhankelijke vorstendommen en republieken, tijdens zijn leven vechten buitenlandse mogendheden om de suprematie in Italië, en bij zijn dood is een groot deel van het schiereiland in vreemde handen. Ook zijn dierbare stad Florence, die hij veertien jaar lang met overgave dient als secretaris van de Tweede Kanselarij, maakt in die tijd turbulente ontwikkelingen door. Geen enkele generatie Florentijnen en Italianen heeft de situatie in de stad en op het schiereiland zo vaak, zo radicaal en zo dramatisch zien veranderen als de zijne. Tegen het einde van zijn leven schrijft Machiavelli aan de diplomaat en historicus Francesco Guicciardini: “Zolang ik me kan heugen, is er altijd oorlog geweest of over oorlog gesproken.” Dit bittere, maar onmiskenbaar juiste feit is maatgevend geworden voor Machiavelli’s politieke werk. Il Principe en de Discorsi zijn vooral een poging Florence en Italië een uitweg te wijzen uit een acute, decennia lang aanhoudende crisis. In de Discorsi vergelijkt Machiavelli de geschiedenis van het oude republikeinse Rome, zoals beschreven door Livius en andere klassieke auteurs, met de eigentijdse geschiedenis van Florence en Italië. Voortbouwend op deze vergelijking formuleert hij een reeks memorabele gedachten over staatkunde en de condition humaine, die altijd een bron van inspiratie zijn gebleven. De eerste uitgave van dit boek verscheen in 1997. Deze nieuwe, geheel herziene en geactualiseerde uitgave bevat ook een uitvoerige appendix met een vertaling van het eerste commentaar op de Discorsi: de Considerazioni intorno ai Discorsi del Machiavelli van Francesco Guicciardini. Paul van Heck was hoofddocent Italiaanse letterkunde aan de Universiteit Leiden. Bij Primavera Pers publiceerde hij ook twee andere Machiavelli-uitgaven: Toneel en verhalend proza. Mandragola Clizia Belfagor (2010) en Il Principe (2019).

De kunst van het oorlog voeren
Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), de beroemde Italiaanse filosoof, zag oorlog als het belangrijkste onderdeel van de politiek. In zijn ideale staat is sprake van een algemene dienstplicht, waarbij de vorst burgers te allen tijde naar het front kan sturen. De heerser
‘Machiavellist’ is een gangbaar woord voor een politicus of manager die in zijn persoonlijke moraal alles ondergeschikt maakt aan zijn eigen machtsuitoefening. In De heerser kan zo iemand opzoeken waarom dat moet, en hoe. Meestal gaat het om een subtiel spel waarbij andermans belangen in het oog worden gehouden, juist omdat de macht dan effectiever kan worden gehandhaafd. Machiavelli geeft richtlijnen voor het beleid van de heerser die zijn zetel ongestoord wil behouden. Daarbij geeft hij voorbeelden van het goed of verkeerd toepassen van gedragsregels, die ten dele amoreel zijn, en niet vrij van een grote dosis cynisme. Het boek is geschreven voor politici, maar het werd onbedoeld een filosofische analyse van het begrip macht. Niet zonder reden was het lievelingslectuur van zowel Napoleon als Stalin.
