Norman Douglas
Norman Douglas (1868–1952) werd geboren in Oostenrijk, ging naar school in Duitsland en Engeland en verbleef als diplomaat onder meer in Sint Petersburg. Hij reisde door India en Noord-Afrika voordat hij zich op Capri vestigde. Douglas leidde niet alleen het klassieke zwervende bestaan van de beter gesitueerde Europeaan van die dagen, maar moest vanwege zijn vrije seksuele moraal ook regelmatig het veld ruimen om aan de strenge morele wetten van een land te ontkomen. Douglas was een hedonistische vrijdenkende intellectueel. In Nederland verscheen tot dusver alleen zijn fraaie autobiografie Looking Back (Terugblik). Zijn belangrijkste roman South Wind verschijnt nu voor het eerst in een Nederlandse vertaling: van Johan Hos.
