Mick Rooney RA was brought up in Sutton, Surrey and London. He has lived in Italy and Spain and stayed in Holland, Morocco, Mexico, The Seychelles, Antigua and Romania. Rooney is the recipient of several prestigious awards and prizes and has work in many public and private collections including: The Royal Collection (Windsor), The Royal Academy of Art (London), De Beers Consolidated, The Gulbenkian Foundation, Towner Art Gallery (Eastbourne) and Deutsche Bank (London). He has lectured in many art colleges, and in the 1990s he became Head of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools. For the last 14 years he has lived and worked in Charlbury, North Oxfordshire. Paul Theroux is the author of many highly acclaimed works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Mosquito Coast (1981) and Mr Bones: Twenty Stories (2014). His awards include the American Academy Arts & Letters Award for Literature, the Whitbread Prize and a Royal Medal from the Royal Geographical society.

Jonathan Tucker is a former associate director of the Indian and Southeast Asian department at Spink and Son and has operated a gallery in St James's, London, with his wife Antonia Tozer since 2000. He is also a consultant for Bonhams and is a recognised authority in the field of Indian and Southeast Asian art, particularly in sculpture.Tucker lived in Asia for eleven years and spent many years exploring the ancient trade routes between China and Europe, travelling the entire length of the Silk Road with the exception of Iraq. He is the author of The Silk Road: Art and History (Philip Wilson Publishers), The Silk Road: Asia, Afghanistan and Iran (I.B. Tauris), and The Troublesome Priest: Harold Davidson, Rector of Stiffkey.

Ashley Bickerton: Ornamental Hysteria

Bali-based artist Ashley Bickerton (born 1959) rose to prominence in the early 1980s as part of New York’s East Village art scene with his vibrant abstract works critiquing consumer culture and the commodification of the art object. Alongside Jeff Koons, Meyer Vaisman and Peter Halley, Bickerton pioneered what was called the “Neo-Geo” movement with his unconventional paintings devoid of Expressionist brushstrokes. Featuring works that span the duration of Bickerton’s career thus far, from the earlier consumerist works up to the recent tropically colored mixed-media paintings of exotic, erotic fantasies and nightmares, Ashley Bickerton: Ornamental Hysteria draws from works in Damien Hirst’s Murderme collection. This fully illustrated book offers a thorough survey of the artist’s diverse body of work and includes essays by novelist Paul Theroux and art critic Nicola Trezzi, as well as a conversation between Bickerton and the filmmaker Roddy Bogawa.
