Jonas Mekas, Shiver of Memory
The texture of memory and the ability of art and film to bear witness to traumatic events are delicately approached in this book-length essay by a Mekas cinephile. For years, filmmaker Peter Delpeut has had Jonas Mekas's Movie Journal within easy reach of his desk. Since his student days, he has been a great admirer of the Lithuanian-American ‘Godfather of avant-garde cinema’. Until he was startled in June 2018 by an article in The New York Review of Books. Historian Michael Casper claimed that Mekas had deliberately forgotten or misrepresented certain events during World War II. Seeded by this controversy over Mekas’s memories of his Lithuanian youth and Mekas’s pain over his subsequent exile, Delpeut’s essayistic and self-reflective book flowers into an inquiry about memory and forgetting; the moral compass of the future that cannot find its bearing in the past; the abilities of art to witness; and the roles we all must play in writing the adequate history of events too traumatic for a just accounting. Although there is little doubt that Mekas himself never participated in the horrors of the Holocaust in Lithuania, his silence about the fate of his Jewish countrymen and neighbors could be said to enable a rewriting of history, at the sacrifice of witness testimonies. Het vergeten kwaad
De herinneringen van cineast Jonas MekasPeter Delpeut duikt in het verleden van Jonas Mekas in ‘Het vergeten kwaad’. Al jarenlang heeft Delpeut op grijpafstand naast zijn bureau Mekas’ ‘Movie Journal’ staan. Sinds zijn studententijd is hij een groot bewonderaar van de Litouws-Amerikaanse cineast. Totdat hij in juni 2018 werd opgeschrikt door een artikel in ‘The New York Review of Books’. Historicus Michael Casper beweerde dat Mekas bepaalde gebeurtenissen in het Litouwen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bewust is vergeten of verkeerd heeft voorgesteld. Van de ene dag op de andere werd Mekas de zoveelste gevallen engel in een lange rij van culturele beroemdheden die door hun ‘oorlogsverleden’ werden achtervolgd. Grid Corrections
For English please see below Het Public Land Survey System, ofwel het Jefferson Grid, is het systeem waarmee landmeters eind achttiende eeuw het midden en Westen van de Verenigde Staten in keurige vierkanten verdeelden van exact één bij één mijl. Maar omdat de aarde rond is, liepen de lijnen naar het noorden taps toe. Daarom moest het raster gecorrigeerd worden: grid corrections brachten om de 20 mijl theorie en praktijk weer bij elkaar. Toen vlieger- en luchtfotograaf Gerco de Ruijter tijdens een residentie in Wichita (Kansas) in 2016 over deze kaarsrechte stofwegen reed, kwam hij ze tegen: kleine knikjes en T-kruisingen in het verder volkomen geometrische wegennet. Doordat de verspringingen in het raster steeds variëren, ontstaat een veelvormige en dynamische reeks van beelden die vervreemdt en verwondert. De Ruijter speurde met behulp van Google Earth duizenden van deze correcties op: ondergesneeuwd of uitgedroogd, in steden en woestijnen, door alle seizoenen heen. Dit boek toont een selectie van ruim 250 van deze grid corrections, gekozen en vormgegeven door Gerco de Ruijter en grafisch vormgever Irma Boom. Begeleid door een tekst van schrijver Peter Delpeut vormt dit bijzonder vormgegeven boek een kunstwerk en monument ineen, getuigenis van de menselijke drang om het landschap in te richten en de vele manieren waarop de natuur daarop reageert. -- The Public Land Survey System or Jefferson Grid is the system with which surveyors divided the middle and west of the United States into neat squares of exactly one by one mile in the late eighteenth century. But because the earth is round, the lines tapered to the north. Therefore the grid had to be corrected: every 20 miles, grid corrections brought theory and practice back together. When pilot and aerial photographer Gerco de Ruijter drove along these dead straight dust roads during a residency in Wichita (Kansas) in 2016, he came across them: small bends and T-junctions in an otherwise completely geometric road network. The grid corrections are all different and therefore create a multiform and dynamic series of images that alienates and amazes. With the help of Google Earth, De Ruijter looked up thousands of these corrections: snowed under or dried up, in cities and in deserts, throughout the seasons. This book presents a selection of over 150 grid corrections, selected and designed by Gerco de Ruijter and graphic designer Irma Boom. Accompanied by a text by writer Peter Delpeut, this exceptionally designed book is a work of art and monument in one, a testimony to the human urge to design the landscape and the many ways in which nature responds to that urge.

Objectief Nederland
Veranderend landschap 1974-2017For English see below -- In 1974 legde Reinjan Mulder (1949) een grof raster over de kaart van Nederland en trok eropuit om op de 52 kruispunten te gaan fotograferen. Doel was de objectieve werkelijkheid van Nederland vast te leggen, ongekleurd door tradities, bereikbaarheid en schoonheidsidealen. Het project werd 42 jaar later tentoongesteld in het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, en in opdracht van Rijksadviseur voor de fysieke leefomgeving Berno Strootman geherfotografeerd door fotografe Cleo Wächter (1993). Met ongeëvenaarde precisie, maar niet zonder eigen artistieke inbreng, voltooide Wächter in 2017 het herfotografieproject Objectief Nederland 1974-2017. De twee fotoseries worden nu gebundeld in Objectief Nederland. Veranderend landschap 1974-2017, een historisch document dat de vele veranderingen van het Nederlandse landschap in de afgelopen halve eeuw op een vernieuwende manier in kaart brengt en tegelijk fotografie als kunstvorm en bron van wetenschap bevraagt. Is fotografie ooit écht objectief te noemen? En leent iets wat begon als kunstproject zich wel voor wetenschappelijke doeleinden? -- In 1974, Reinjan Mulder (b. 1949) placed a coarsely-woven grid on top of a map of the Netherlands and set off to photograph the 52 resulting intersections. His aim was to capture the objective reality of the Netherlands, uncoloured by traditions, accessibility and beauty ideals. The project was exhibited at the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum 42 years later, and was re-photographed by photographer Cleo Wächter (b. 1993), on request of Government Advisor for the Physical Living Environment Berno Strootman. Working with unparalleled precision, Wächter succeeded in contributing her own artistic perspective and completed the re-photography project Objective Netherlands 1974-2017 in 2017. The two photo series are now combined in this book, a historical document that innovatively maps the many changes the Dutch landscape went through over the past 50 years and simultaneously raises questions about photography as an art form and scientific source. Can photography ever be truly objective? Can something that started out as an art project also lend itself to scientific purposes?

Kruisverhoor
In de Noord-Hollandse bollenstreek is een babylijkje gevonden. Een meisje van zeventien wordt gearresteerd. Ze draagt de sporen van een zware bevalling. Maar ze zwijgt. Rechercheur Martin Jansen heeft de gave om iedere verdachte aan het praten te krijgen. Als op eerste kerstdag een collega zijn hulp inroept, kan hij niet weigeren.
