Al jarenlang heeft Delpeut op grijpafstand naast zijn bureau Mekas’ ‘Movie Journal’ staan. Sinds zijn studententijd is hij een groot bewonderaar van de Litouws-Amerikaanse cineast. Totdat hij in juni 2018 werd opgeschrikt door een artikel in ‘The New York Review of Books’. Historicus Michael Casper beweerde dat Mekas bepaalde gebeurtenissen in het Litouwen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bewust is vergeten of verkeerd heeft voorgesteld. Van de ene dag op de andere werd Mekas de zoveelste gevallen engel in een lange rij van culturele beroemdheden die door hun ‘oorlogsverleden’ werden achtervolgd.
