Raymond Roussel
Raymond Roussel (1877–1933) is, net als André Gide en Marcel Proust, een schrijver die met één been nog in de negentiende eeuw staat terwijl hij aan de andere kant de deuren naar de moderne tijd reeds geopend heeft. Roussel geldt als een buitengewoon eigenzinnig en complex auteur en wordt, behalve met het surrealisme, verbonden met verschillende Franse literaire groepen: de Patafysici, de Semiotici, Tel Quel (waar ook Raymond Queneau deel van uitmaakte) en de Oulipo. Roussel liet zich in zijn werk leiden door taalprocédés, nam lijsten, opsommingen en tekeningen op in zijn boeken en ruimde een belangrijke plaats in voor alle mogelijke machines. Belangrijke titels zijn L’Impressions d’Afrique (1910) en Locus Solus (1914).
