    Building Value

Most businesses don't fail because of bad products or insufficient capital. They fail because owners confuse working hard with building value. You started your business with passion and vision. But somewhere between solving today's crisis and chasing next week's revenue, that vision got buried. You're working longer hours than ever, yet the business still depends entirely on you. You own a job, not a company.Building Value cuts through the noise with a framework tested across thousands of small and mid-sized businesses: The 5 Keys for Achieving Success.1. Know Where You Are Going - Most mission statements are meaningless. Learn to articulate your Why in a way that drives every tactical decision and aligns all stakeholders.2. Be Flexible and Aware - Change is constant. Discover how to anticipate market shifts, competitive threats, and technological disruption before they threaten your survival.3. Build Simple and Repeatable Systems - Stop reinventing the wheel daily. Create processes that work without your constant intervention.4. Create Space and Time - If you can't step away for a week without the business imploding, you haven't built a business-you've built a trap.5. It's About the Business, Not You - The hardest truth: your personal attachment may be the biggest obstacle to creating transferable, sustainable value.Author Richard Greene draws on decades as a business advisor and banking executive to show you exactly where most owners go wrong and how to fix it. Through vivid examples of both triumphs and failures, he reveals why 75% of family businesses don't survive the first generational change, and why most owners who plan to "make a killing" when they sell discover they've built nothing worth buying. This isn't theory. It's a distillation of hard-won wisdom from thousands of entrepreneurs who learned these lessons the expensive way.Whether you're building a family legacy, preparing for exit, or just trying to work less while earning more, this book will challenge you to see your business differently-and show you exactly how to build something of lasting value.Short enough to read on a weekend. Specific enough to implement on Monday.

Stray Studies From England And Italy

Stray studies from England and Italy presents a collection of thoughtful essays that explore societal concerns, historical moments, and the author s personal reflections drawn from experiences in England and Italy. The work highlights the tension between the beauty of landscapes and the struggles of those living in poverty. It underscores the importance of compassion blended with practical action, particularly through the portrayal of figures devoted to alleviating suffering while promoting dignity and self-reliance. The narrative draws attention to the lives of those who work tirelessly to address inequality and to the quiet yet profound impact of their efforts. Observations of rural Italy s charm and urban England s hardships offer contrasting portraits that enrich the discussion of social responsibility. The essays encourage readers to reflect on the complexities of charitable work and the necessity of empowering communities rather than merely offering temporary relief. The writing combines personal insight with a call for thoughtful, enduring change, suggesting that true progress arises from empathy coupled with active, sustained commitment to justice.

Finding the Eye of the Storm

Most of us wonder about the meaning of life and our purpose for being. We ponder the inconsistencies that life brings. How do we reconcile humanity's great accomplishments with its cruelty and failings? For years, I sought to make sense of it all, to reconcile the good in the world with the bad that persists. I wondered if this quest was beyond my understanding. Then I died. Dying is not an end; rather it is an awakening. Death removed the veil of individuality and reunited me with singularity of creation. Finding the Eye of the Storm is my journey beyond mortality and lessons learned that allow me - and, I hope, you - to navigate a chaotic world.

    Becoming Old

A collection of poems on aging, such as:I See Myself Becoming OldMy closet is full of suits I don't wear anymore.Nothing I need to wear them for. There are days when I stay in my pajamas till noon.I picture my heirs looking at my wardrobe one dayasking "Can you think of anyone who can use theseor should we give them to Goodwill?"Or, "Would you like this tie as a remembrance of Dad?"As I read the obits of the recently deceased, which I took to doing a few years ago,I compare their ages to mine. Then there's the arthritis in my hands and feet.My left foot aches when I walkand I suffered a rupture in a time-worn tendon not long ago.I have more trouble lifting things and getting around.Don't jump over puddles anymorefor fear of the damage I might do coming down.(No more kicking up heels for me.)What will it be next, the incipient cataracts? My hearing isn't what it used to be.I don't think I need a hearing aid yet, though my daughter disagrees.Or will it be something unforeseenlike that ill-fated tendon?I see myself becoming old,yet it's as if I were watching it happen to somebody else.

    The Caterpillar and the Butterfly

A collection of autobiographical poems by Richard Greene.Richard Greene has been writing poetry intensively since he retired from a 38-year career in international development in the mid-1990s. A lawyer by training, he fell into his development career by accident when, after law school, though planning not to practice law but interested in international affairs, he accepted an unsolicited job offer from the U.S. Agency for International Development. After a few years in Washington (or Foggy Bottom, as the location of the U.S. foreign policy establishment is known), he was assigned as legal advisor to the USAID mission in Laos and there discovered that the development business suited his interests and inclinations very well. Greene wrote poetry beginning in the 8th grade and continued through college where he studied with a Professor, Henry Rago, who later became editor of Poetry magazine, the leading U.S. poetry journal. However, he wrote few poems after law school as he became absorbed in international development, but turned back to poetry as he neared retirement.

A Curmudgeon's Guide to Postmodern Times

Now revised and updated with new aphorisms!Reader beware: This book contains material that disparages cherished beliefs, opinions and institutions including political and religious ones. While some readers may find that material refreshingly irreverent, others may find it offensive. The aphorism quoted on the cover, Patriotism, piety and chastity are all much overrated virtues, offers a relatively mild example. Some of the aphorisms offer potentially even more offensive material, so proceed with caution. Here are a few examples of Mr. Greene's aphorisms:Sex wouldn't be nearly so interesting if it weren't so widely forbidden. The truly strong are those who aren't driven by the need to prove their strength.Lawyers, actors and politicians must fool others. In the process they often fool themselves. We tend to forget that not all mothers are saints, nor all soldiers heroes. The most important measure of civilization is compassion, not technology, culture, sophisticated institutions, power or the gross national product.

Conspiracy Theories in the Time of Coronavirus: A Philosophical Treatment

Microchips, government-replaced bird drones, QAnon and vaccine tracers: these are just a few of the most common conspiracies we have heard over and over again throughout most of 2020-2021's news cycles. There are common categories of conspiracy theories, variants of which pop up over and over again, and new and outrageous theories that seemingly appear overnight. While most of them are easily debunked, conspiracy theories and their root causes can be used to closely track people's most significant philosophical concerns at a point in time. In this up-to-date study of conspiracy theories, the authors look at the history of conspiracy theories, discuss the history and hallmarks of such theories, and examine what counts as a conspiracy theory--and what doesn't.
