In zijn latere werk, waaronder Fragments d’un discours amoureux en La Chambre claire, verkent hij de grenzen van auteurschap, tekst en visuele representatie. Barthes schreef met precisie en esthetische kracht, balancerend tussen systeemkritiek en persoonlijke sensibiliteit. Jeanne Holierhoek (1947) vertaalde eerder een biografie van Roland Barthes, evenals talrijke werken uit de Franse filosofie, onder andere van Michel Foucault, Simone de Beauvoir, Didier Éribon en Catherine Malabou.
