De grote reis
'De grote reis' beschrijft de lange vierde nacht van een reis die van het Franse Compiègne naar het concentratiekamp Buchenwald voert. De hoofdpersoon is gearresteerd wegens zijn activiteiten voor het Franse verzet en staat met honderdnegentien medegevangen samengeperst in een goederenwagon op transport naar wat later Buchenwald blijkt te zijn. Tijdens de rit voert hij diepgaande gesprekken met de naamloze ‘jongen uit Semur’, die tegen hem aangedrukt staat en het transport uiteindelijk niet zal overleven. Soms staan ze urenlang stil, passeren ze een station. In lange, tergende stiltes komen herinneringen aan vroeger naar boven, aan zijn rol in het verzet en de verhoren van de Gestapo. Van het verleden springt het verhaal naar de toekomst: naar de bevrijding van het kamp en de reis terug naar het bevrijde Frankrijk. Deze verteltechniek, waarin heden, verleden en toekomst samenvallen, maakt De grote reis tot een indrukwekkende literaire prestatie. Jorge Semprun (1923-2011) werd geboren in Madrid. Na het uitbreken van de Spaanse burgeroorlog vertrok hij als veertienjarige met zijn ouders naar Nederland en in 1939 naar Frankrijk. In 1943 werd de verzetsgroep waarin hij actief was opgerold en werd hij naar Buchenwald gedeporteerd. Na zijn vrijlating uit het concentratiekamp werd Semprun lid van de leiding van de illegale Spaanse communistische partij tot hij in 1964 als partijlid werd geroyeerd.
