Rembrandt-Hoogstraten – Colour and Illusion
The book accompanying the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition in Vienna about Rembrandt van Rijn and his brilliant student Samuel van Hoogstraten Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn and his work are explored from the perspective of his most important and exceptionally innovative pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten. Van Hoogstraten’s multi-faceted oeuvre attests to the influences of his teacher Rembrandt, but also to his competitive spirit and the independent paths taken by his talented pupil. For his part, Rembrandt reacted to impulses supplied by his pupil Van Hoogstraten. From the multiplicity of possible themes relating to the two artists, the chosen focus will highlight two essential aspects of their oeuvre: colour and illusion. These determine the choice of works and the focus of the essays. In doing so, the present volume provides a comprehensive overview of the creative oeuvre of both artists and offers the opportunity to contrast and compare their outstanding talents. This publication accompanies the eponymous exhibition from 8 October 2024 until 12 January 2025 at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.

Ik ben een van de eerste kunstenaars die werkt met digitale technologie, maar ik maak tegelijk ook gebruik van traditionele methodes, zoals beeldhouwen, keramiek enzovoort. Je zou mijn werk kunnen omschrijven als een kruisbestuiving tussen de virtuele en de fysieke wereld.” — Nick ErvinckDit boek kwam tot stand naar aanleiding van het werk Cabinet of Curiosities, dat Nick Ervinck voor de bibliotheek van Waregem maakte. Daarmee bracht hij een hommage aan de iconische Britse beeldhouwer Henry Moore, aan wie veel hedendaagse kunstenaars, zoals hijzelf, schatplichtig zijn. Aan de hand van de elementen in Ervincks Cabinet of Curiosities (boeken, schelpen, schaalmodellen, speelgoed, kristallen…) gaat deze publicatie op zoek naar de gedeelde fascinaties van beide kunstenaars en naar de gelijkenissen die over het generatieverschil heen te vinden zijn in hun werk. Naast een bijzondere interesse in organische vormen delen Ervinck en Moore ook de wens om artistieke grenzen te verleggen, elk binnen de mogelijkheden van hun eigen tijd. Ze willen een innovatieve vormentaal creëren met uiteenlopende, nieuwe materialen en technieken. Ze ambiëren steevast een kruisbestuiving tussen datgene wat door de mens gemaakt is en wat organisch gegroeid is. Het knippen en plakken van digitale beelden in 3D-software bij Ervinck doet conceptueel bijvoorbeeld denken aan de manier waarop Moore natuurlijke objecten integreerde in zijn maquettes. Verder hebben zowel Moore als Ervinck veel aandacht voor hoe een sculptuur zich tot de ruimte verhoudt. Ze creëren allebei biomorfe figuren die de wereld waarin ze geplaatst worden bevragen. Door gebruik te maken van zijn typische RAL 1003-geel maakt Ervinck van zijn sculpturen vreemde cesuren in ons door digitale en fysieke beelden overstelpte leven en slaagt hij erin de toeschouwer te laten stilstaan bij de betekenis van het beeld en bij zijn eigen positie in de wereld. Het boek wordt ingeleid door Sebatiano Barassi en bevat een essay van Jon Wood en een gesprek tussen Nick Ervinck en Sam Cornish.

The world of BruegelThe Battle Between Carnival and Lent is a masterpiece by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525/30-1569). Dating from 1559, the world-famous painting is rich in remarkable stories and characters. This book zooms in on the many everyday objects portrayed by Bruegel in the painting. These objects have been meticulously examined and interpreted through a contemporary gaze. Just as Bruegel's paintings served in the sixteenth century as conversation pieces among guests at dinner, so too this book presents a three-way discussion about The Battle Between Carnival and Lent. Art history (Katrien Lichtert), historic design (Alexandra van Dongen and Lucinda Timmermans) and literature (Abdelkader Benali) engage in dialogue with one another. The publication also includes an introduction by Bruegel expert Manfred Sellink and a study of the painting by curator Sabine Pénot of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Together, the authors shed light on the humour, symbolism, visual language and concealed meanings carried by the household objects in the painting, from a humble begging bowl to a waffle iron. This publication in celebration of the 450th anniversary of Bruegel's death was made possible thanks to a unique collaboration between leading museums. It appears on the occasion of the major exhibitions Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and The World of Bruegel in the Bokrijk Open-Air Museum in Genk, in collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Bruegel The Elder
The 450th Anniversary editionBruegel. The Hand of the Master was the first ever exhibition to unite paintings, drawings and prints by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It was the result of six years of research that also involved input from numerous experts in the fields of art history, conservation and science. The curatorial team - Elke Oberthaler, Sabine Pénot, Manfred Sellink and Ron Spronk, with Alice Hoppe-Harnoncourt - invited these experts to present findings from their own research at the 2018 symposium The Hand of the Master: Materials and Techniques of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. All the papers presented at the symposium are collected in this publication, Essays in Context, a special 450th anniversary edition in commemoration of the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1569. The focus is on insights derived from the artworks themselves. The results of the investigations into Bruegel's drawings and paintings using modern imaging techniques, the natural sciences and dendrochronology, as well as the observations by the paintings' restorers, provide brand-new information. The analysis of Bruegel's compositions and what he actually depicted (objects, clothes, gestures) is seen within the wider context of the life and times of the artist and his patrons. Rounded up by the latest research into Bruegel's life, the historical art market and previous attitudes to his oeuvre, the entire volume is intended to offer new directions for future study. Five essays by the curators, initially only available in the e-book version of the 2018 exhibition catalogue, are included too. Bruegel's inventions and stories create artworks with a timeless power, and this volume, containing 24 essays and more than 500 illustrations, provides a comprehensive survey of the artist's oeuvre and will be an indispensable resource for Bruegel fan and scholars alike.
