De blinde uil
'De blinde uil' is een van de grootste Perzische meesterwerken van de moderne tijd van een weergaloos schrijver die lange tijd tegen zijn innerlijke demonen moest vechten en te jong overleed. Dertig jaar geleden verscheen De blinde uil (1937) voor het eerst rechtstreeks uit het Perzisch vertaald in het Nederlands, in een vertaling van Gert J.J. de Vries. Tachtig jaar geleden werd de roman daarnaast voor het eerst gepubliceerd, reden genoeg voor een heruitgave. In de roman probeert de verteller zijn waanzin te bezweren door die op schrift te stellen en zo te analyseren, en zich te verzoenen met zijn onafwendbare, naderende dood. Hij neemt de lezer bij de hand en toont zijn innerlijke wereld en leven, wat buitengewoon krachtige, directe literatuur oplevert, die een brok in de keel doet ontstaan. 'Er is slechts één angst die me bezighoudt en dat is dat ik morgen zou sterven zonder mezelf te hebben gekend. In de loop van mijn leven heb ik gemerkt dat er een immense kloof bestaat die mij van mijn medemensen scheidt. En ik heb bovendien geleerd dat men zo zwijgzaam mogelijk door het leven dient te gaan en zijn gedachten zo veel mogelijk voor zichzelf dient te houden. Ik heb nu weliswaar het besluit genomen om over mezelf te schrijven. Maar daarmee beoog ik uitsluitend mezelf kenbaar te maken aan mijn schaduw - die schaduw op de muur.' Uit: 'De blinde uil' Sadegh Hedayat (1903, Teheran) werd in een hoogopgeleide, aristocratische familie geboren, waardoor hij toegang had tot goed onderwijs. Hij kwam in contact met de Franse literatuur door naar een katholieke school te gaan. Samen met een aantal andere studenten ontving hij in 1925 na de middelbare school een beurs om in Europa te studeren. In eerste instantie kwam hij in Gent terecht voor een ingenieursstudie, maar dat was slechts van korte duur. Hij probeerde het nog een aantal keer aan andere instituten - het vakgebied was immers voor voorwaarde verbonden aan zijn studiebeurs - maar uiteindelijk kreeg hij toch toestemming om Franse letterkunde te studeren. Hij schreef tijdens zijn verblijf meerdere essays, onder andere over vegetarisme en een aanklacht over wreedheid tegen dieren - hij was sinds jonge leeftijd om principiële redenen vegetariër - maar zijn bekendste werk, 'De blinde uil', publiceerde hij later pas tijdens een verblijf in Bombay. Hedayat leed aan depressies en in 1951 pleegde hij zelfmoord in Parijs. Hij ligt begraven op Père Lachaise.

Widely regarded as Sadegh Hedayat's masterpiece, the Blind Owl is the most important work of literature to come out of Iran in the past century. On the surface this work seems to be a tale of doomed love, but with the turning of each page basic facts become obscure and the reader soon realizes this book is much more than a love story.
