De inleiding en vertaling verschenen eerder in 1999 en zijn voor deze uitgave geheel herzien. Meer dan tevoren glanst Sallustius hier door zijn tegendraadse stijl. Daarmee heeft hij zijn plaats verworven tussen de allergrootsten, naast zijn geliefde voorbeeld, Thucydides, en zijn beroemdste navolger, Tacitus.
