Het levert maatschappelijke spanningen op, die onvermijdelijk tot ontlading komen. de romeinse geschiedschrijver gaius sallustius crispus (86-34 v.chr.) geeft hiervan twee voorbeelden: de samenzwering van catilina (63) en de oorlog tegen jugurtha (111-105). deze relatief kleine episodes tekenen de diepe crisis waarin rome is beland: gefrustreerde burgers nemen het op tegen de staat, corrupte magistraten verprutsen een oorlog en laten zich manipuleren door een barbaarse koning. met zijn pessimistische en tragische visie werpt sallustius een boeiend licht op het republikeinse rome. dat hij ook persoonlijk vuile handen heeft gemaakt, als politicus en beschermeling van julius caesar, maakt hem nog interessanter. De inleiding en vertaling verschenen eerder in 1999 en zijn voor deze uitgave geheel herzien. Meer dan tevoren glanst Sallustius hier door zijn tegendraadse stijl. Daarmee heeft hij zijn plaats verworven tussen de allergrootsten, naast zijn geliefde voorbeeld, Thucydides, en zijn beroemdste navolger, Tacitus.
