The End
Samuel Beckett was born in Dublin in 1906. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, in the late twenties he went to Paris to join the staff of the École Normale Supérieure. He met James Joyce and his first published work was an essay on Joyce's Work in Progress (later Finnegans Wake). After travelling in Germany and undergoing psychotherapy in London, he settled in Paris, where he remained during the Second World War, active in the French Resistance. From the spring of 1946 he elected to use French as his language of literary composition and over the next five years he wrote two plays, four novels, poetry, criticism and four novellas in that language. He was awarded the Noble Prize for Literature in 1969.

E però, man mano che procede nella sua indagine, Moran assomiglia sempre piú a Molloy. Lo troverà? O i due sono l'opposto della stessa persona? Molloy è il romanzo della ricerca di un'identità impossibile. Un testo che ha in sé tutti i tratti distintivi del mondo beckettiano e rappresenta una delle espressioni letterarie piú profonde del nostro tempo. Il viaggio di Molloy, che procede per cerchi, che ha una meta e poi la perde e poi la ritrova, che è irto di difficoltà e che è interrotto da lunghe soste, è stato spesso paragonato a quello di Ulisse, di cui costituirebbe una versione parodica. O forse, piú in generale, costituisce una parodia del viaggio in quanto costante della letteratura europea. Piú in generale ancora, possiamo dire che è la cultura occidentale nel suo insieme che viene sbeffeggiata da Molloy, il cui percorso rifà e rifiuta le precedenti tappe filosofiche e artistiche dell'interpretazione dell''uomo'. È un fatto che il racconto di Molloy è asperso di momenti umoristici che nascono proprio dall'irrisione di principi filosofici e ideologici di grande rilievo per la nostra cultura; ma anche dall'irrisione di topoi basilari della letteratura occidentale, come quello dell'amore romantico.
