Music at the Threshold from the Sacred to the Dangerous
In Music at the Threshold from the Sacred to the Dangerous, author Sean Williams explores the connection of liminality to musical culture by focusing on how performance practices tend to occur at liminal places and times, and often by potentially marginalized people who are, in fact, central to the expression of cultural identity. Williams highlights issues of access and interdisciplinarity and shows how people use music to facilitate transformation in culturally bound ways. Featuring themes of access to the unknown, dual faith, erotic power, longing for home, transgression, and resistance, each chapter draws from an array of musical settings and cultural traditions that, considered on their own, might not be as remarkable without seeing the greater picture. Rather than focus on a single genre in a single place, this meta-ethnography casts a wide thematic net across genres, regions, and people. The erotic allure of the female-coded being who sings men to a watery death differs from the nostalgic allure evoked in the hearts and minds of immigrants by the music and foods of home, but an internal ache exists regardless. From sounds and rituals used to connect to the ancestors with music used by those who practice more than one religion, the sacred looms large in both vernacular and mainstream practices. The twin dangers of transgression and resistance-whether by musically thriving while being both queer and Black or performing hip hop in an endangered language-bring to light acts that celebrate strength and honor cultural practices. Liminal moments, or lifetimes, that are sacred, alluring, or dangerous appear again and again to remind us of the centrality of music in our lives.

Or take a trip to Cairo and enjoy an Egyptian feast? The Ethnomusicologists' Cookbook takes you around the world on a culinary journey that is also a cultural and social odyssey. Many cookbooks offer a snapshot of individual recipes from different parts of the world, but do nothing to tell the reader how different foods are presented together, or how to relate these foods to other cultural practices. The Ethnomusicologists' Cookbook, Volume II
This collection of major meals from a variety of regions in the world emphasizes the interconnectedness of food and music across cultures. Each entry is written by an ethnomusicologist, or someone familiar with the links between food and music in that particular region. Entries follow the same structure as Volume 1: the chapter begins with a food-related proverb particular to that region and then moves into suggestions on arranging the meal, a list of ingredients, the recipe, and a list of further reading and companion listening pieces to complement the meal. A highlight of each entry is a short written segment on the significant links between music and food in the region, with notable examples specific to the area. Covering over four dozen regions, The Ethnomusicologists' Cookbook, Volume 2, will especially appeal to instructors and students in ethnomusicology and related fields such as anthropology, sociology and food studies, but will also find a place on the bookshelf of anyone who enjoys eating and learning about foods from around the world.

Bright Star of the West
Bright Star of the West traces the life, repertoire, and influence of Joe Heaney, Ireland's greatest sean-nós ("old style") singer. Born in 1919, Joe Heaney grew up in a politically volatile time, as his native Ireland became a democracy. He found work and relative fame as a singer in London before moving to Scotland. Eventually, like many others searching for greater opportunity, he emigrated to the United States, where he worked as a doorman while supplementing his income with appearances at folk festivals, concerts and clubs. As his reputation and following grew, Heaney gained entry to the folk music scene and began leading workshops as a visiting artist at several universities. In 1982 the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Heaney America's highest honor in folk and traditional arts, the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship. Heaney's works did not become truly popular in his homeland until many years after his death. Today he is hailed as a seminal figure of traditional song and is revered by those who follow traditional music. Authors Sean Williams and Lillis Ó Laoire address larger questions about song, identity, and culture. They explore the deep ambivalence both the Irish and Irish-Americans felt toward the traditional aspects of their culture, examining other critical issues, such as gender and masculinity, authenticity, and contemporary marketing and consumption of sean-nós singing in both Ireland and the United States. Comingling Heaney's own words with the authors' comprehensive research and analysis, Bright Star of the West weaves a poignant critical biography of the man, the music, and his continuing legacy in Ireland and the United States.

Wild Chiasm
What is the truth of wildness? What is the strange character of our encounter with those things and places that we call ''wild''? Is there a way to think wildness beyond the contradictions of the American relationship to wild places? This book attempts an answer. Drawing principally on the work of French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty, as well as David Abram and the American poet and essayist Gary Snyder, it uses phenomenological description to bring the experience of encounters with wildness to language, to let them speak of what they are for us. The result is a thought of the wild as that which is at once radically other and intimately bound to us. The play of this difference seems to be close to the root of the fascination that some people evince in encounters with the wild. The conclusion is that encounters with what is wild are profoundly ethical, teaching us that we are deeply tied to that which seems most different.
