Le texte s'attache notamment aux mécanismes de l'oubli passager (avec parfois des "noms de substitution" qui s'imposent), a la formation de faux souvenirs, et a la manière dont une idée ou une tendance refoulée peut perturber une intention consciente, en détournant le cours de l'association et de la mémoire.Freud étend ensuite ces points de vue aux lapsus et aux erreurs de lecture/écriture, en soulignant leur proximité avec d'autres actes manques et en proposant, pour des cas développés, une démarche d'examen reposant sur les chaines d'associations. Le chapitre sur les "actes symptomatiques et accidentels" distingue les actes qui se dissimulent sous la maladresse de ceux qui "se produisent pour eux-memes" et que l'on excuse volontiers par l'absence d'intention, afin d'en interroger la signification et les conditions d'apparition.La dernière partie formule une conclusion générale : certains actes "en apparence non-intentionnels" se révèlent, soumis a l'examen psychanalytique, "parfaitement motives et determines", et l'ouvrage discute la croyance au hasard, la superstition, et la tendance à interpréter ce qui survient, en opposant hasard "extérieur" et hasard "intérieur"
