Wat we de mens verplicht zijnSimone Weil is de enige echte grote geest van onze tijd. Albert Camus Het korte leven van Simone Weil (1909-1943) getuigde ruimschoots van haar overtuigingen. In 1942 vluchtte zij uit Frankrijk naar Amerika en vervolgens naar Londen om samen te werken met de groep van De Gaulle. Het postuum gepubliceerde Verworteling was een direct resultaat hiervan. Het doel ervan was te helpen bij de wederopbouw van Frankrijk na de oorlog. In Verworteling, haar magnum opus, reflecteert Weil op het belang van religieuze en politieke sociale structuren in het leven van het individu. Een ander geen honger laten lijden is volgens haar een van de basisverplichtingen die wij als mensen hebben. Maar even belangrijk is onze verplichting tegenover onze gemeenschap: we mogen dan verschillende mensenrechten hebben afgekondigd, maar we hebben de verplichtingen over het hoofd gezien en dit heeft ons zelfingenomen gemaakt en ontworteld. Het is alsof Weil een rechtstreekse waarschuwing richt tot ons, de burgers van de 21ste eeuw. «'Wachten op God' is zonder twijfel het hoogtepunt van alles wat Simone Weil heeft geschreven.» - Susan Sontag Simone Weil werd in 1909 te Parijs geboren uit welgestelde, liberaal-joodse ouders. Tussen de studenten van de filosoof Alain in Parijs trok zij de aandacht door haar uitzonderlijke intelligentie, strijdbaarheid en geestkracht. Na haar doctoraal wijsbegeerte volgde een periode van links activisme die haar in 1936 voerde naar Spanje om te strijden tegen de Franco-fascisten. Plotseling, tijdens een ziekteverlof in Assisi, kreeg haar leven een nieuwe dimensie: de religie, en dan vooral de wijsgerige kant daarvan. Lichamelijk verzwakt zette zij haar studie voort naar de leermeesters der levenswijsheid. Naast Plato en Spinoza, verdiepte zij zich in de Bhagavad-Gita en in de christelijke mystici. Vooral in deze jaren zette zij haar eigen gedachten op papier, en schreef tevens talrijke brieven aan vrienden met beschouwingen over het leven en het mens-zijn in het licht van de eeuwigheid. Ternauwernood ontkomen aan de nazi's in bezet Frankrijk, stierf zij in 1943, volledig uitgeput, in Engeland. «Wachten op God» werd in de jaren 1941-1942 geschreven als een poging de 'dodelijke tegenspraak van onze tijd te overwinnen'.
