Stanislaw Lem (1921-2006) was born in Lviv, then part of Poland. He is probably the most original and influential European science-fiction writer since H.G. Wells. Best known in the West for Tarkovsky's film of his novel Solaris, Lem wrote novels and stories that have been published all over the world. He is credited with anticipating in his writing artificial reality, e-books and nano-technology. His most famous works include The Cyberiad, Mortal Engines, The Star Diaries, The Futurological Congress, Tales of Pirx the Pilot and Solaris.

È il 1964 quando Stanislaw Lem, tra i maggiori scrittori di fantascienza e non solo del Novecento, inizia la stesura delle prime pagine della "Summa Technologiae". Di cosa si trattava? Non di un altro romanzo, ma di una raccolta di riflessioni, saggi e scritti teorici nei quali l'autore di Solaris, coniugando la fantasia e l'eleganza del narratore con la finezza del filosofo e l'esattezza dell'ingegnere, andava a caccia dei segni che avrebbero consentito a lui e ai suoi lettori di decifrare il domani. Un domani che Lem preconizzava permeato dall'enorme sviluppo tecnologico, il cui impatto sull'umanità avrebbe mostrato e anticipato in queste pagine. Dalla "intellettronica" alla "fantomatica", quelle che oggi chiameremmo realtà virtuale e intelligenza artificiale, dal sovraccarico di informazioni alle microtecnologie, dalla relazione tra le macchine e la verità e fino alla possibilità di cercare o creare nuovi mondi, è difficile scorrere le pagine della Summa senza avere la strana sensazione di tenere tra le mani il rapporto scritto magnificamente da un misterioso viaggiatore del tempo, da un personaggio uscito direttamente dalla science fiction tanti anni fa e venuto a visitare la nostra era. E tuttavia il libro di Lem, arguto, profondo, ironico, visionario, non è soltanto una raccolta di profezie che in gran parte si sono avverate (le altre, supponiamo, si realizzeranno nei prossimi decenni). Non è nemmeno una storia fantastica, né uno studio particolarmente lungimirante sulla tecnologia, ma non è nemmeno un'allegoria sociale o una brillante analisi filosofica.
