La trasformazione del liberalismo in una nuova ortodossia ha generato malcontento nei paesi «imitatori», frustrati da uno sforzo che li ha portati a tradire la propria identità. Questo meccanismo aiuta a comprendere non solo il comunitarismo populista, xenofobo e autoritario dell'Ungheria di Orbán e della Polonia di Kaczyski, ma anche la bellicosa politica estera della Russia di Putin. Anche gli «imitati», tuttavia, possono provare risentimento per la politica dell'imitazione. È il caso degli Stati Uniti di Trump, che temono di essere spossessati del proprio potere dagli imitatori del modello americano, si tratti degli immigrati o della Cina. Ivan Krastev e Stephen Holmes mettono in luce le dinamiche di autodistruzione dell'ideologia liberale come utopia universale e delle radici dell'antiliberalismo e ci permettono di comprendere i paradossi post-1989 attraverso un'analisi politica e psicologica acuta e sfaccettata.
