Hij was actief in Brittannië, waar hij Romes macht wist te consolideren en sterk uit te breiden. Zijn expedities voerden hem tot in onbekende contreien als Ierland en Schotland. Gnaeus Julius Agricola (40-93), succesvol Romeins generaal en gouverneur, jarenlang vertrouweling van de Romeinse keizers Vespasianus en Domitianus. En schoonvader van de grote geschiedschrijver Cornelius Tacitus. In een van zijn vroegste teksten beschrijft Tacitus (ca. 56-117) het leven en werk van Agricola. Vol trots over diens prestaties. En vooral: vol bitterheid over wat zijn schoonvader is aangedaan. Want Domitianus misgunde Agricola ten slotte de eer van zijn werk en haalde hem terug naar Rome, waar hij geen rol van betekenis meer speelde. Een onrecht dat Tacitus deels wil goedmaken met zijn indringende biografie. Geschreven voor de eeuwigheid, maar tegelijk zijn meest persoonlijke boek. Het toont de diepste drijfveren van zijn schrijverschap.

Tacitus was born ca.AD 56, probably in northern Italy or southern France, and made his way in Rome as a newcomer. He rose to the highest political rank of consul, and subsequently acting as governor of the prestigious province of Asia. Before The Annals and The Histories, Tacitus wrote the Agricola (a historical biography of his father-in-law, who played an important role in the pacification of Britain); the Germania (an ethnographical description of the Germans living on the fringes of the Roman empire); and the DialogueOn Orators (an exploration of the declining role of rhetoric in contemporary society).
