Tra il 1951 e il 1955 Viktor Frankl fu invitato da un'emittente radiofonica viennese a tenere una conversazione mensile su problemi di ordine psicoterapeutico. Ciò che si proponeva non era tanto il 'discutere' di psicoterapia quanto piuttosto il 'fare' della psicoterapia attraverso il microfono, utilizzando la radio come mezzo capace di contrastare la nevrosi collettiva. Spinto anche dall'enorme successo delle trasmissioni e dalle lettere ricevute dagli ascoltatori, decise poi di raccogliere i testi di quelle conversazioni, ampliati e annotati. Anche se ogni conversazione affronta - con lo stile fresco e diretto proprio della lingua parlata - un argomento a sé, le intersezioni sono inevitabili e ciò che si delinea alla fine è un pensiero coerente basato sulla resilienza, sull'abbracciare la vita anche davanti alle più grandi avversità, e soprattutto sulla ricerca di senso, che diventa un potente strumento terapeutico.
