    Evolution

"Evolution" provides an accessible and authoritative exploration of the fundamental principles of biological transformation and the history of life on Earth. Written during a pivotal era in scientific discourse, this work demystifies the complex mechanisms of natural selection, heredity, and the origin of species for a general audience. Vernon L. Kellogg, a distinguished entomologist and biologist, examines the evidence for evolution found in the fossil record, comparative anatomy, and embryology. He addresses the then-emerging fields of genetics and cytology, bridging the gap between Darwinian theory and modern scientific understanding. The book delves into the philosophical and social implications of evolutionary thought, emphasizing its role as a unifying concept in the natural sciences. Rich in historical significance, "Evolution" remains a vital document for understanding the development of scientific education in the early twentieth century. It offers readers a clear-eyed perspective on the continuity of life and the intricate processes that shape the diversity of the natural world. This work serves as both an educational primer and a compelling defense of scientific inquiry into the origins and progress of life. Ghosted

A social, historical and scientific exploration of ghost-hunting, and why our fascination with the paranormal is as timeless as the ghosts we hope to find. The history of ghosts is ancient, but the history of active ghost-hunting is relatively recent, and investigations into the paranormal have developed hand-in-spirit-hand with scientific discoveries, from radio waves to smartphone apps. Now, more than ever, we want to find our own ghosts. Is it to help process grief? Become influencers? Or ease our fears of death?Ghosted follows the story of paranormal investigations from the Victorian era to the modern day, examining how our fascination with ghost hunting has changed alongside technology and culture. Where we once gathered around tables, observing and recording every movement of the medium, we now take electronic equipment and app-laden phones around haunted locations to catch ghosts digitally. Where theatres and concert halls held sold-out performances by conjurers recreating the tricks of fraudulent mediums, we now delight in picking apart and exposing the evidence presented on reality television programmes. In this book, Alice Vernon embarks on a journey to encounter a ghost, travelling to some of the UK's most haunted locations and encouraging readers to interrogate their own scepticism and belief. Ghosted examines what we are looking for, why we are looking for it, and why have we never given up the ghost.

    Forerunners

Did you see someone who really wasn't there? Did you hear three unexplained knocks on your door or window, or when you were alone, did someone whisper your name in your ear. Did a family picture fall off the wall and shatter for no good reason? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, then you may have experienced what is commonly referred to as a forerunner. Forerunners are serious business. And forerunners, in all their forms, are a harbinger of death. Those who have experienced them confess that the presence of such a force has touched their soul, leaving them, in many cases, shaken to their core. These are their stories.

  11. There's Something Your Son Needs to Tell You

There's Something Your Son Needs to Tell You

Honest, raw, and completely vulnerable, There's Something Your Son Needs to Tell You acts as an open letter that encourages other young men to step forward and share their stories about sexual abuse in hopes that we will save our little boys. At least one and six men have been sexually abused. And many of them are afraid and ashamed to talk about it. This fear is heightened in the black male community where a stigma persists around sexual abuse and sexual identity that reflects a homophobic and hypermasculine society. While many victims turn to religion to cope with their trauma, many religious organizations have either perpetuated the abuse or swept it under the rug. This book uses one experience to shed light on an ongoing issue and inspires others to take immediate action. Born and raised in Baltimore Maryland, Vernon Ennels Jr. began serving his community at age 16 when he was ordained as a deacon. He also served as the Church Administrator for over (20) years and assisting in implementing the vision of the church, while also ensuring excellence in the operations. Inspired by community activism, he became the founder of JR Executives, a youth leadership organization based in Arizona. And he has worked for nearly two decades as a project manager focusing on energy conservation in government, private, and public markets. As a father to a young son and a mentor to youths, Ennels' mission is to encourage discourse around childhood trauma, mental illness, and spirituality

  12. Red Sky at Night

    Red Sky at Night

"Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning; red sky at night, sailor's delight." Maritime tradition holds that such warnings be taken seriously. And with good reason; lives often hang in the balance. Sailors aren't alone in seeing in the world a connectedness that is often lost in the modern world. In Atlantic Canada, thankfully such beliefs still play a role in everyday life. This is a collection of many of those age-old beliefs from the region's best and most eclectic collector. We also get well known Atlantic Canadians to weigh in with some of their superstitions. Gemini award winning actor and writer, and star of the hit comedy This Hour Has 22 Minutes Cathy Jones recalls many of the "old sayings" from her childhood. Author Allan Lynch remembers home remedies administered by his parents, aunts and grandparents. Former NHLer Glen Murray talks about the superstitions of the game. And singer/songwriters Dave Gunning, Joel Plaskett, Terry Kelly and Rita MacNeil all admit to being just a little bit superstitious. From Nancy Regan, meteorologist Peter Coade, movie reviewer Richard Crouse, and Bluenose II Captain Philip Watson, they are all here.
