John Hafen
A meticulously researched, comprehensive biography showcasing the work of Utah artist John Hafen, including over 200 images of the artist’s work, along with 50+ photos and historical clippings.In his short life as an artist, John Hafen (1856–1910) earned the title of Utah’s “poet painter.” He was a Latter-day Saint artist in a philosophical and evangelical sense, although he was not a painter of Christian genre, themes, or content. Rather, he searched for the universal and eternal beauty underlying the mountains and rural nature. While he vigorously eschewed commercialism in art, because of dire poverty and a large family (10 children) he was continually “forced” to paint quick pictures for the trade just to get by from day to day. But taken all together, he was still the clearest voice of the aesthetic conscience of Utah fine art in his day. His capo d’opera was the equal of the best Utah artists and fared well nationally. His contributions to Utah art were profound and long-lasting. He was the instigator of the Paris art mission and the lead painter of the murals in the Salt Lake Temple. He began the art department at Brigham Young Academy (now BYU), was president of the Utah Art Institute, and cofounded the Springville Museum of Art. Because of the lyrical nature of his landscapes and the poignancy of his short life and career, John Hafen is remembered as Utah’s “poet painter.”

Pucci de Rossi
An artist-designer who defies classification, Pucci de Rossi (1947-2013) was a pillar of the European art scene in the 1980s. Originally from Verona, and trained by the American sculptor H. B. Walker, Pucci de Rossi created his first pieces by assembling wooden furniture to make some rather odd-looking and unstable forms, somewhere between thrones and time machines. "My profession was a game to me," he once remarked. "I was cutting, I was making, I was inventing." His first designs, steeped in poetry and humor, recalled the minimalism of Arte Povera as much as Studio Memphis' neobaroque. Jewelry, furniture, sculpture, painting: Pucci's universe knew no limits except those of his own imagination. In his hands, even the most modest materials transcended themselves to become works of great visual and functional power. This was soon recognised; after 1985 he regularly exhibited in Paris, and in New York at the gallery Néotù, founded by Pierre Staudenmeyer. Some of his most notable accomplishments involve designing the layout for the Barbara Bui boutique in Paris, and the palace of the auctioneer Jean-Claude Binoche in Venice. In the 1990s his work was on display at the Downtown Gallery, and in 1994-1995 he collaborated with the CIRVA in Marseille. Shortly prior to his death, Jacques-Antoine Granjon, one of his most faithful collectors, commissioned a sketch for the frontage of the VentePrivée.com building in La Plaine-Saint-Denis. Baptized 'Vérona', the metallic skin covering the façade, which was inspired by that drawing, pays tribute to him today. Pucci de Rossi created more than 900 pieces during his lifetime; this book gives him the commemoration he deserves. Text in English and French.

Solitary Pleasures is the first anthology to address masturbation, exploring both the history and artistic representation of autoeroticism. Masturbation today enjoys a highly equivocal and contradictory status among cultural discourses relating to sexuality. On the one hand, it is the subject of much popular treatment, especially in sexual self-help books, advice columns, and in pop culture--for example, Madonna's "Like a Virgin" performance, a recent Roseanne episode, and David Russell's movie Spanking the Monkey. On the other hand, masturbation is still a taboo subject for most people in everyday conversation. Perhaps more surprising, it has been largely dismissed by academics as a trivial, humorous topic and the "history of a delusion."It was not until the eighteenth century that "onanism" was portrayed as a morbid act of epidemic proportions that produced pox, hair loss, blindness, insanity, impotence and a horrible. Its prevention and treatment warranted diverse and often cruel measures: surveillance, diets, drugs, corsets, electrical alarms, urethral cauterization, clitoridectomy, and labial sewing. This literature's apocalyptic warnings about the personal and social morbidity of "pollution-by-the-hand" are largely unknown to most people today, but the ghostly echoes of these admonitions still inform and preserve the present taboo of the subject.Why did this apparently innocuous activity become so overpoweringly stigmatized?
