  2. Southern Europe in The Covid-19 Pandemic

Southern Europe in The Covid-19 Pandemic

This book investigates the fast-learning experience of Covid-19's initial onset in a region long renowned for low state capacity, political polarisation and weak health systems. Covid-19, a global health emergency entailing a major existential threat, presented a crucial challenge for national governments and political systems. It elicited drastic policy measures, including unprecedented lockdowns. The question of how and why some states acted more effectively in facing this emergency situation has important implications for future crisis management. The outcomes varied greatly across countries, ranging from examples for emulation to dire portents of the consequences of losing control. Case studies of Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey examine crisis preparedness, policy response, political dynamics and societal reception. A comparative overview chapter offers potential explanations for the divergence in national performance. This volume will be of great use to students and researchers across the fields of European studies, political leadership, public policy, governance and public health. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of South European Society and Politics.

    In Flaming Letters

A treasury of poetry and prose from an unsung trailblazer of Black literature Lucia M. Pitts (1904-1973) was an African American writer and Army veteran whose story has never been told. Her poetry, including love lyrics of striking sensuality and honesty, was admired by Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Dorothy West. Her work first appeared during the Harlem Renaissance, influenced by Harriet Monroe's Poetry magazine and blues singers Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. A native of Chicago's Bronzeville, Pitts challenged discrimination and segregation throughout her remarkable life, both as a member of President Franklin Roosevelt's "Black Cabinet" and as the first African American woman employed at the War Department. Then, in 1943, Pitts joined the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the Army's only all-Black, all-female battalion, which later received the Congressional Gold Medal. Pitts's own account of her service with the Six Triple Eight, however, has remained unpublished until now. This volume brings together a biography of Pitts, her complete military memoir, and one hundred of her finest poems.

  4. Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage

    Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage

Cultural heritage comprises the inherited customs, beliefs, traditions and artefacts that define the identity and history of a society. It includes tangible artefacts like monuments, artworks and manuscripts, as well as intangible aspects such as rituals, languages and music. Conservation and preservation efforts are crucial in safeguarding cultural heritage from natural decay, human impact and environmental changes. Cultural heritage management involves strategies to protect and promote these assets, balancing conservation with accessibility for public education and tourism. By recognizing and valuing cultural diversity, the society contributes to economic development and social union on a global scale. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to reconstruction of cultural heritage. While understanding the long-term perspectives of the topics, the book makes an effort in highlighting their impact as a modern tool for the growth of the discipline. It is an essential guide for both academicians and those who wish to pursue this discipline further.

This impressive, lucidly written study makes a compelling case for both its national and global importance."- Peter Gurney, Professor, University of Essex, UK   This open access book explores the Co-operative College's distinctive adult educational tradition over the past century as it provided education for co-operative leaders, employees and members in addition to developing a range of wider educational initiatives and ideas internationally. The Co-operative College is a British educational charity established in 1919, founded on co-operative principles. 10. Reconstruction Beyond 150

    Reconstruction Beyond 150

No period of United States history is more important and still less understood than Reconstruction. Now, at the sesquicentennial of the Reconstruction era, Vernon Burton and Brent Morris bring together the best new scholarship on the critical years after the Civil War and before the onset of Jim Crow, synthesizing social, political, economic, and cultural approaches to understanding this crucial period.Reconstruction was the most progressive period in United States history. Although marred by frequent violence and tragedy, it was a revolutionary era that offered hope, opportunity, and against all odds, a new birth of freedom for all Americans. Even though many of the gains of Reconstruction were rolled back and replaced with a repressive social and legal regime for African Americans, the radical spark was never fully extinguished. Its spirit fanned back into flame with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and its ramifications remain palpable to this day.
