The Terrestrial Macroinvertebrates of the Sub-Antarctic Iles Kerguelen and Ile de la Possession

The sub-Antarctic islands are remote and isolated environments with original flora and fauna composed of a few species that are highly adapted to cold oceanic conditions. Their peculiar naturalness makes these ecosystems intrinsically fragile. This book focuses on terrestrial ecosystems and, in particular, on invertebrates - earthworms, mollusks, spiders and insects - that inhabit the French sub-Antarctic islands of the South Indian Ocean. All native and introduced species are presented in the form of individual fact sheets, which include the main identification criteria, geographical distribution and principal ecological traits. Numerous summary tables, distribution maps of introduced species, and a discussion on the originality and vulnerability of this fauna are also included. The Terrestrial Macroinvertebrates of the Sub-Antarctic Iles Kerguelen and Ile de la Possession is based on an expansive literature base, as well as on observations and photographs taken as part of a research program funded by the French Polar Institute Paul-Emile Victor (IPEV). The book also gives an important part to the history of the discoveries of the different species, as well as current conservation issues.

    Playground

Basketball shoe, tennis shoe, trainer or sneaker, regardless of the name, they have influenced the way we live, and the way we dress, since the early 20th century. Worn by millions of people the world over, sneakers have, in just a few decades, become a mass-market product that transcends gender, age, and social and cultural background. But how did a simple sports shoe make the leap from the pitch to become a genuine fashion accessory or even a piece of art? With over 600 pairs, films, archive documents, photos and personal accounts, this book presents all the facets of this iconic object, from its success with New York breakdancers to the cutting-edge technological research that goes on with that. Text in English and French.

    American Insects (1908)

American Insects is a book written by Vernon Lyman Kellogg and published in 1908. The book is a comprehensive guide to the insects found in America, and is intended for both amateur and professional entomologists. It covers a wide range of topics, including the anatomy and physiology of insects, their life cycles, behavior, and ecology. The book also includes detailed descriptions and illustrations of over 1,000 different species of insects, including beetles, butterflies, moths, ants, bees, wasps, and many others. Each species is described in detail, including information on its physical characteristics, habitat, behavior, and distribution. The book is written in a clear and concise style, making it accessible to readers of all levels of expertise. Overall, American Insects is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the study of insects, and remains an important reference work in the field of entomology. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

  5. Model Systems of Development and Aging of the Nervous System

Model Systems of Development and Aging of the Nervous System

The last decade has generated a multitude of studies using in vitro model systems to explore growth and differentiation of the nervous system. Although the findings have been exciting and have revealed unique properties of neural cells, considerable concern continues to be expressed regarding the significance of in vitro findings in terms of their applicability to in vivo biological events. To examine this issue further, a group of scientists pre sented and discussed their findings at a conference sponsored by the Institute of Developmental Neuroscience and Aging held in Crete, Greece, 26-29 May 1985. The conference was cosponsored by the University of Crete and was generously supported by the Ministry of Research and Technology of Greece, Tourism Organization of Greece, and also Sandoz and FIDIA. The Directors of the Institute of Developmental Neuroscience and Aging are indebted to these Institutions for their support. For the success of this conference, the Directors owe much to Drs. Eleni Fleischer-Lambropoulos and Yiannis Tsouderos, who spent countless hours in making arrangements so that the participants would have not only a scientific, but also a unique cultural, experience. Several chapters of this book focus on the complex phenomena of neurogenesis and gliogenesis, and the modulation of neuronal differentiation. The concept that neuronal differentiation has both genetic and epigenetic components is documented by elegant studies using both in vitro cultured cells and neurons transplanted in vivo.

    Seasons of Learning

The first in-depth treatment of the school/work transition, this book raises the level of discussion above simple how to strategies. Howard considers the values, choices, responsibilities, and challenges facing the student leaving college or graduate/professional school. The transition from school to work entails a reconstruction of experience and of the self that marks the beginning of a crucial stage in the course of a life. Besides shifts in the aims and values attached to learning for school and for work, there are commitments and costs involved in professional life that require special consideration if one is to avoid the hazards of burnout, narrowness, and the loss of cherished skills. To survive personally and professionally in the new, ruthless economy, one needs to be highly adaptable and able to communicate well. In this thought-provoking book Howard underscores the utility of a broad liberal education as a preparation for work.

    Game Bird Breeders Handbook

Three of the most imminent researchers in the keeping, rearing, and nutritional studies of pheasant, quail, and partridge have combined their sixty years of experience to produce this handbook of aviculture. An indispensable tool. Upland game birds represent some of the most colorful and attractive birds in the world. Certain species of pheasants, quail, and partridges are raised for their economic importance as birds for sport shooting and as gourmet food items. Millions of these birds are harvested in the wild and on private shooting clubs. Privately owned game bird farms supply the birds that are released at shooting clubs. Some of these birds are also used for populating established or new game bird habitats. Exotic and rare species of game birds are also kept in special aviaries throughout the world, Most bird fanciers are interested only in maintaining exotics for their beauty, but some do recognize the importance of conserving the pure blood lines of species that are threatened by habitat destruction and uncontrolled hunting pressure. Many aspects of husbandry for domestic and exotic game birds are similar, yet there are important differences as to the amount of space needed for breeding stock, method of breeding (mass or pedigree mating), housing, nutrition, and egg care and incubation practices. This book was written for the purpose of updating the most recent methods used to reproduce commercial and exotic species of game birds. The most current methods of egg handling, incubation, nutrition, housing, lighting, and disease control are described for domestic and exotic species of pheasants, partridges, and quail. The authors offer detailed information on genetics, embryo development, artificial insemination techniques, and bird biology that are considered helpful to beginners, experienced game breeders, and bird biologists. This book can be used as a text or reference for college courses in avian or upland game bird management.
