Dans Michel Strogoff, Jules Verne invite son lecteur au voyage à travers les plaines de Sibérie sur les traces de Michel Strogoff, courrier du tsar de Russie chargé de gagner Irkoutsk depuis Moscou pour avertir le frère du tsar de l'invasion imminente des Tartares commandés par le traître Ivan Ogareff. Il rencontre une jeune fille, Nadia, qui espère retrouver son père. Il l'aide en faisant croire qu'elle est sa s¿ur. Accompagnés par des journalistes, ils surmonteront moult épreuves dont celle, poignante, pour Michel, d'une confrontation avec sa propre mère, qui le conduit à se dévoiler. Parvenant à échapper aux Tartares, il remplit cependant sa mission et permet au grand-duc de triompher. Ce roman, paru d'abord en feuilleton dans le Magasin d'Éducation et de Rédaction puis en volumes en 1876, a connu de très nombreuses adaptations, du théâtre à la bande-dessinée, en passant par la télévision et le cinéma.
