Music in the Films of Lars Von Trier

An exploration of one of contemporary cinema's most provocative directors, this book considers Lars von Trier's innovative use of pre-existing music, demonstrating how it shapes cinematic meaning through a unique combination of music and film analysis, archival research, and insider interviews. From the world's end set to Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde in Melancholia, through the haunting performance by Björk on the gallows in Dancer in the Dark, to the reinterpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ piece "Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" as a metaphor for hypersexuality in Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier's films employ pre-existing music as a central storytelling device.Drawing on exclusive access to Lars von Trier's private archives and interviews with key collaborators, this book uncovers the behind-the-scenes processes that bring these musical moments to life. It explores how pre-existing music is adapted, reimagined, and interwoven with visual narratives. The book's transdisciplinary approach reflects the diversity of Lars von Trier's films, offering fresh perspectives on musical adaptation, audience engagement, and the collaborative nature of filmmaking. By examining Lars von Trier's entire filmography, it provides a deeper understanding of how music shapes cinematic storytelling and its emotional resonance, making it a valuable resource for film studies and musicology.

    Callas and Her Doubles

João Pedro Cachopo examines the intensification of the myth of Maria Callas in the 21st century, focusing on media-driven projects around the celebrated soprano that illustrate the coexistence of technological euphoria and cultural nostalgia in the digital age.Nearly 50 years after the death of Maria Callas (1923-1977), the myth of the legendary soprano not only persists but has gained new intensity. The Callas phenomenon has transcended the realm of opera, revealing a paradox of our time: the intertwining of technological euphoria and cultural nostalgia. This intensification extends far beyond traditional tributes, such as exhibitions and biographies. It is characterized by a wave of technologically ambitious projects that stand out for their media complexity and artistic boldness. In 2017, Tom Volf initiated the Maria by Callas project, encompassing an immersive exhibition and an innovative documentary. The following year, Callas in Concert, a live show with a hologram of the singer, toured internationally. More recently, in September 2020, Marina Abramovic premiered her multimedia opera-performance, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, at the Bayerische Staatsoper. All this raises a fundamental question: in an era dominated by technical reproducibility, is the value of aura in decline, or is it metamorphosing? And what does the acceleration of the Callas myth reveal, not only about the artist and her legacy, but also about contemporary culture and our collective imagination?

    Bangtan Remixed

    A Critical BTS Reader

“Painted with both passion and erudition, Bangtan Remixed presents a complex portrait of a band that challenged and changed the rules of popular music today.” - Suk-Young Kim, author of (K-Pop Live: Fans, Idols, and Multimedia Performance) “Equal parts fan letter, manifesto, and critical research essay, Bangtan Remixed is a work of care and collectivity. Assembled by an impressive squad of queer and feminist scholars and writers who are also unabashed ARMY, the book helps us listen and think differently about BTS by starting from the radical premise that the best music writing can (and should!) be prompted by deep feeling and pleasure. As this reader and its contributors ask us to do, to take BTS seriously is to also reckon with the afterlives of war and empire; the changing landscape of pop music; and the people and places we imagine produce musical aesthetics, business models, and knowledge that matters.” - Christine Bacareza Balance, author of (Tropical Renditions: Making Musical Scene in Filipino America) "For readers undaunted by this combination of fandom and academia, Bangtan Remixed will be a rewarding experience, and for outsiders to the world of K-pop, it serves as a reminder of how much popular music has changed in terms of how it is produced and consumed in an interconnected world." - John A Riley (Asian Review of Books) "Bangtan Remixed is a diverse collection of perspectives that has clearly been compiled with great care. Its well-written and concise chapters will serve as a valuable source and engaging read for those passionate about BTS, both personally and academically." - Megan Moon (Asian Studies Review) "A welcome exploration of the K-pop band BTS and its fan group, ARMY. . . . It will be of considerable interest to people interested in K-pop, the Korean wave, popular culture, pop music, and, perhaps most importantly, fandom. Recommended. Undergraduates through faculty; professionals." - T. R. Tangherlini (Choice)

    Folk (Music) Education

Popular Music, Race, and Media Since 9/11

Nabeel Zuberi explores how popular music in the US and UK has mediated violence and racial conflict since 9/11. The text brings together studies from a range of contexts and genres: Hip-hop MCs on both sides of the Atlantic have rapped about the figures of the terrorist, refugee and immigrant, and commented on the surveillance and policing of racialized populations. Punk rock bands have lambasted anti-Muslim racism and Islamic orthodoxies. The sonic intensities of bass music have re-articulated the weaponization of music in torture and the soundscapes of military conflict. Pop stars have become sites for flame wars and memes in racialised discourse across social media. Through discussions of recording artists such as M.I.A., Das Racist, Swet Shop Boys, the Kominas, The Bug, Burial, Vatican Shadow, Fatima Al Qadiri, and Zayn Malik, this book engages with recent scholarship in media and communication studies, popular music studies, sound studies, ethnomusicology, and sociology.
