The essay on military chaplains stands out, as it discusses going beyond the unarmed morale officer for war-weary troops, to becoming a middle-range actor in affirming that those outside the military unit are not 'other.' The essays demonstrate in diverse ways that religion can be the source of conflict, but also a source of peace building, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. Summing Up: Recommended. This book was of more help to me in understanding the Bible than most I have read in the past thirty years. 'Christianity Today' Eller has wit as well as learning and some very real insight into biblical wisdom.... Agnostics and skeptics along with a large number of co-religionists could very well appreciate his original...interpretation. 'Publishers Weekly' Although Eller's touch is light, his goal is sharply in focus: to get his reader to adopt such a faith in God and His sovereign providence that he is willing to defer to Him who is the Great Avenger, rather than to take things into his own hands as far as His Cause is concerned, including one's own welfare....
