    "Non era forse un po' troppo azzardato pretendere di delineare in pochi capitoli le origini del pensiero greco, ossia di abbozzare il quadro delle mutazioni intellettuali che si producono tra il Dodicesimo secolo prima della nostra era, quando crollano i reami micenei, e il Quinto secolo, il momento in cui si colloca il fiorire di una città come Atene? Settecento anni da sorvolare, la massima parte dei quali, dal Dodicesimo all'Ottavo secolo, rappresentata dal periodo battezzato dagli storici dell'antichità come "secoli oscuri" giacchè, scomparsa in quell'epoca la pratica della scrittura, non disponiamo per conoscerla di nessuna fonte grafica, di nessun testo. Su un'estensione temporale di questo genere non era dunque possibile procedere come uno storico o un archeologo che mobilitano per la loro indagine tutte le risorse della loro disciplina. Nella forma di un semplice saggio, la cui ambizione non era chiudere il dibattito con una ricerca esaustiva ma rilanciarlo orientando la riflessione su una nuova strada, ho così tentato di ridisegnare le grandi linee di un'evoluzione che, dalla monarchia micenea alla città democratica, ha segnato il declino del mito e l'avvento dei saperi razionali. Di questa rivoluzione intellettuale ho proposto un'interpretazione globale che mi sembrava, nella sua coerenza, conforme ai principali dati di fatto di cui disponiamo.
