Nat Tate. Un artista americano 1928-1960

Nel 1998 la 21 Publishing, la casa editrice fondata da David Bowie, pubblicò una raffinata monografia di William Boyd dedicata a un pittore sconosciuto alla comunità artistica internazionale del tempo: Nat Tate. Corredata da foto del pittore e da immagini di suoi disegni, la monografia ricostruiva la breve e tragica esistenza di un artista di cui, in apparenza, non restavano che esili tracce. Utili, comunque, ad apprendere che Tate nacque nel New Jersey nel 1928, rimase orfano da ragazzo e fu adottato da una ricca coppia di Long Island. Grazie a un indiscusso talento per la pittura, frequentò una scuola d'arte e poi il milieu artistico del Greenwich Village, a Manhattan, dove negli anni Cinquanta, in cui emergevano e si affermavano le nuove tendenze dell'arte contemporanea, riscosse un certo successo come giovane esponente dell'Espressionismo astratto. L'abuso di alcol, tuttavia, e il fatale incontro con due geni della pittura, Pablo Picasso e George Braque, conosciuti entrambi in Francia durante il suo unico viaggio all'estero, lo gettarono in una profonda prostrazione. Tate cominciò a dubitare del suo talento e, durante un weekend in cui cadde preda della più cupa disperazione, diede fuoco alla quasi totalità delle sue opere. Tempo dopo si suicidò gettandosi da un traghetto nelle acque del fiume Hudson. Il suo corpo non fu mai trovato. L'interesse per un pittore dimenticato e riscoperto mezzo secolo dopo crebbe e perdurò a tal punto che il 10 novembre 2011 venne battuto all'asta da Sotheby's, con grande eco, un disegno dell'artista: il Bridge no. 114. Nelle pagine della postfazione a questa edizione italiana di Nat Tate, Boyd ricorda al lettore che ogni scrittore è una sorta di dottor Frankenstein che sguinzaglia per il mondo i suoi mostri, ai quali può anche capitare di farsi involontariamente beffe di uomini e cose. In realtà, quest'opera mostra uno dei principi irrinunciabili della scrittura letteraria: che il vero esiste solo in quanto può alimentare il falso, la magnifica finzione in cui consiste il potere proprio della letteratura.
