Per anni William Burroughs si è chiesto per quale motivo i sogni, quando vengono raccontati, risultino sempre così scialbi, finché un mattino non ha trovato la risposta, semplicissima: 'Manca il contesto... come un peluche lasciato sul pavimento di una banca'. E a quel punto un dubbio lo ha sfiorato: 'Sono un alieno? Alieno rispetto a cosa, esattamente? Forse la mia casa è la città dei sogni, più reale della mia cosiddetta vita da sveglio'. Il sogno e il mondo infero sono d'altro canto il contesto di tutte le avventure del corpo e della mente che Burroughs ha affrontato, e di tutti i libri che ha scritto. Andare a zonzo nella Terra dei Morti è normalissimo per uno come lui; unica pecca - lamenta -, non riuscire mai a fare una colazione decente. Nei sogni può incontrare Allen Ginsberg o Mick Jagger, giocare con le amate armi da fuoco, accudire amorevolmente i suoi gatti, disquisire di sesso o di sesso, tempo e morte ('Sia la morte sia il sesso rimuovono il soggetto dal tempo'), e ancora di guerra, scienza, società, futuro e altre bagatelle. E nei sogni può spacciare - senza timore di essere arrestato - pillole proibite di saggezza impopolare nonché dosi micidiali di humour vitreo: sono solo parole, è vero, ma sono anche la prima e ultima droga per i cosiddetti umani.

E riesce a sopravvivere. Il racconto di amori, amicizie, avventure esotiche ilari e turpi, prigionie, ricoveri, e perfino dell'uccisione accidentale della moglie, documenta inoltre la nascita di quella singolare forma narrativa che verrà poi identificata con Pasto nudo, dove Burroughs trasforma le sue ossessioni, quasi sempre di carattere sessuale, in brani di una musica verbale distorta, acida, aliena. Rivolgendo il suo occhio clinico in primo luogo verso se stesso, Burroughs coglie anche manie e fobie americane, dal dopoguerra a oggi, patite sulla propria pelle e restituite con gli interessi alla comunità - e l'autoritratto disegnato dalle lettere si rivela così un'impietosa radiografia del suo paese.
