    Spiral (Andrew Hill Album)

Spiral is an album by American jazz pianist Andrew Hill recorded in late 1974 and ealy 1975 and released on the Freedom label. The album features six of Hill's original compositions and one interpretation of a jazz standard performed by a quartet and quintet. The cover incorrectly identifies the album as being recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival when it actually contains studio recordings. The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars and stated "Although the music overall does not reach the heights of the pianist's earlier work for Blue Note (or his later sessions), there are enough surprising moments and thought-provoking solos to make this a release worth picking up by open-eared listeners".

Now, says Hill, the FT's senior business writer, it is mostly a pithy way of summing up a subject. He argues that we might be carelessly discarding a precious tool

    Barry Altschul

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Barry Altschul is a drummer who gained fame in the late 1960s with the pianists Paul Bley and Chick Corea, playing in the "outside" style of jazz that had been evolving steadily since the innovations of Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane. His first major gig in the late 1960s was with Paul Bley's trio. In 1969 he joined with Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Anthony Braxton to form the group Circle. At the time, he made use of a high-pitched Gretsch kit with add-on drums and percussion instruments, which he integrated seamlessly in a whirlwind of sound. No one sounded quite like him at the time, and his nuclear energy served him well when he teamed up with Sam Rivers and Anthony Braxton throughout the 1970s.

    Time Lines

Andrew Hill occupies a unique niche in jazz history: Too iconoclastic to be part of the mainstream, he was initially marketed as part of the "second wave" avant-garde in the 1960s, yet he was too structured and anchored in the tradition to fit comfortably there. He often found himself on the periphery of the jazz world, only properly recognized and honored in the late 1990s.Notwithstanding his significance for modern jazz, much about Hill's life has been obscured by his exaggerations and outright lies. His fabulism has long frustrated attempts to piece together his background. Born in Chicago, he insisted for decades that he was a native of Haiti and consistently lied about his age. Some falsehoods-like his claim that he studied under Paul Hindemith-went undetected and persist even now.Time Lines: The Life and Music of Andrew Hill provides as full and accurate an account of Hill's life as possible, while also closely examining the music he created as a composer and performer. Featuring memories and insights from a long list of Hill's collaborators, peers, associates, students, and protégés, as well as subject matter experts, eyewitnesses, and journalists, this is the definitive account of one of the most perplexing, elusive, and endlessly inventive figures in modern jazz.
