There is nothing else like it ... This ice is not psychological ice or metaphysical ice; here the loneliness of childhood has been magicked into a physical reality as hallucinatory as the Ancient Mariner's.

Dreaming of Dead People
In the ‘middle of life’ Lavinia reviews her frustrations, her solitariness, the grief and the rapture, her seeming companions in a pageant presided over, as it were, by the masks of Owl, for winter, and Cuckoo, for erotic love. Dreaming of Dead People, first published in the 1970s, remains as surprising, frank, mordantly funny and raw as ever.

Anna Kavan
Mid-Century Experimental FictionIt is fantastic to see the first monograph on Anna Kavan, and to see how it so convincingly argues for her significance. Walker’s reading of Kavan as part of and alongside more familiar elements of mid-century literary culture has the paradoxical and very welcome effect of allowing us to see more fully the disturbing power of her work.
